Job Title: Youth and Family Navigator
Job Summary:
Choices Alternative to Detention (ATD) aims to help young people who have a case in Family Court gain; competence, confidence, positive connections with peers and adults, build character/self-esteem, contribute to their communities, and reduce their involvement in the criminal legal system. Under the direction of the Supervisor, the Youth and Family Navigator works with young people and their families to ensure they have access to benefits/entitlements, appropriate education setting, employment opportunities, and long-term services in the community if needed. The objective of this role is to ensure participants and their families receive opportunities to engage in creative and enriching services that are; strengths-based, culturally relevant, support participants and their families in achieving their self-identified goals, aid in the process of reducing recidivism, and are adherent to the core principles of risk, need and responsivity. The Youth and Family Navigator will work with youth and families to ensure they have connections to long-term services in the community. Bilingual Spanish speaking required.
Shift Hours: This position is full-time Monday – Friday from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Salary: The salary for this role is $59,404.80 per year
Location Address: 4 West 125th Street, New York, NY 10027. Our office is easily accessible by public transportation.
Workplace Flexibility: Flexible - Staff have the flexibility to complete their workday from home or another suitable space, typically after reporting to the office and/or engaging in field or community-based work
What You Will Be Doing:
Develop relationships with community resources that support participant and family needsMeet with caregivers and families to assess needsEscort participants and families to appointments as needed, this will include HRA, DOE, DMV, medical facilities, housing, etc.Organize participant outings and tripsAssist with obtaining vital documents for youth and familiesConnect youth to positive activities in their communities and verify their attendance and participationObtain school attendance and other education documentsManage curfew phone lineOther duties as assigned by the Supervisor
What We Are Looking For:
Experience working with similar populations and/or familiesHistory of navigating systems such as DOE and /or HRACommitment to engagement through collaboration with participants and their familiesMust be able to effectively handle numerous tasks and work well under pressureComfort with home visits and in-community visitsPositive attitude and excellent problem-solving skillsTrained in or committed to training to become competent in a motivational interview and trauma informed approach as a means of engaging young peopleExperience developing relationships with schools, community-based organizations and/or other youth service providersAbility to work in an interdisciplinary and diverse teamTime flexibility: Appointments and activities will sometimes be outside of a typical 9-5/10-6 scheduleFluency in Spanish
