The Forklift Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of building materials within the lumberyard, supporting the rebuilding efforts of surrounding communities. This role involves operating mid-size industrial forklifts, handling materials such as windows, doors, and wood supplies, and providing exceptional customer service.
Shift: 1st Shift, 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Pay: $20/hour
Essential DutiesMaterial Handling: Load and unload building materials (e.g., windows, doors, wood supplies) for residential and commercial properties, with 60% of the time spent on manual loading/unloading and 40% operating a mid-size industrial forklift.Workload Variability: Manage daily tasks ranging from loading a single full truck to handling multiple smaller loads, depending on shipping requirements.Customer Interaction: Meet with community members and customers to facilitate the pickup of bundled materials prepared by yard hands.Yard Operations: Build loads, load company and customer vehicles, and maintain an efficient, clean, and safe lumberyard.Inventory Management: Pull and stage materials accurately to meet schedules, conduct cycle counts, and ensure proper shipment and receipt of materials.Equipment Maintenance: Properly use and maintain all equipment, adhering to safety protocols.Customer Service: Provide exceptional service to contractors and do-it-yourselfers by assisting with material selection and loading.Continuous Learning: Stay informed about products, packaging, procedures, and safety protocols.Organization and Cleanliness: Ensure pulled materials are neatly arranged, presentable, and free of debris.Proactive Initiative: Identify and address tasks without needing direction.SkillsCore Skills: Order pulling, material handling, production, forklift operation, heavy equipment handling, picking, general labor, warehouse operations, and use of hand and power tools.Additional Skills: Packaging, remodeling, manufacturing, and inventory management.Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with current office technology and computer literacy.Communication: Strong verbal communication skills for customer interactions.Independence: Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.Education & ExperienceEducation: High school diploma preferred but not required.Experience: Prior experience in a customer service environment and knowledge of building material products.Certifications: Must be trained, capable, and licensed/certified to operate forklift equipment, often handling heavy and awkward loads.Material Transport: Knowledge of safe methods for transporting materials via delivery vehicles, stairways, elevators, or boom operations to the point of stocking or delivery.QualificationsComfortable standing for extended periods and moving heavy materials.Ability to follow safety rules, sales protocols, and inventory management procedures.Strong organizational skills to maintain a tidy and efficient lumberyard.Proactive attitude and ability to take initiative in a fast-paced environment.Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
