The Veterinary Technician will provide essential support in the clinical management of various animal research subjects, contributing significantly to the clinical mission of Research Animal Resources. This hybrid role focuses primarily on small animals (80%) and to a lesser extent on large animals (20%). The position offers a modified work schedule, where Fridays through Mondays are considered the primary working days, following an initial training period from Monday to Friday.
ResponsibilitiesIndependently triage, manage, and maintain records of clinical concerns for small animals such as mice and rats.Manage and document clinical cases for other small animal species under veterinary supervision.Consult with veterinarians regarding clinical case management and animal treatments.Collect, maintain, and ensure compliance of written documentation and records using relevant software like eSirius.Review and communicate clinical care plans with investigators.Perform techniques such as restraint, oral, IM, IV, IP, and SQ injections, and blood and tissue collection.Calculate drug dosages and manage controlled substances.May manage rodent breeding colonies.May perform diagnostic lab techniques, including in-house parasitology and basic microscopy.Review and process small animal transfer requests.Perform weekend treatments for large animals, including injections and oral medications.Communicate with veterinarians on large animal case management and report any clinical abnormalities.Document, maintain, and ensure compliance of records using software like LabKey.Assist veterinary, research, and Animal Resources staff as needed, including providing medical care and research manipulations.Accurately calculate drug dosages for oral and injectable medications and handle controlled substances appropriately.Essential SkillsProficiency in veterinary anesthetics, injections, and drug calculations.Experience with animal surgery, animal handling, husbandry, monitoring, and surgical instrumentation.Knowledge of animal health, anesthesia, IV placement, intubation, and case management.Ability to handle and restrain laboratory animals safely.Knowledge of regulations and principles for the care and use of laboratory animals.Proficiency with software such as LabKey.Additional Skills & QualificationsHigh school diploma or equivalent.One year of related animal experience.Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science or related field preferred.Registered Veterinary Technician license preferred.Registered Laboratory Animal Technician certification preferred.Knowledge and skills in catheterization, intubation, drug calculation, and anesthetic monitoring, preferably with ventilator experience.Work EnvironmentThe Veterinary Technician will be working in the Operating Room and Animal Research Lab. This environment requires the use of safety equipment and involves handling and moving objects and materials weighing up to 50lbs.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $23.00 - $27.00/hr.
