(USA) Director, Data Stewardship
Position Summary...As the Director, Data Stewardship for Sam’s Club, you will lead a newly formed, cohesive data stewardship team responsible for building, scaling, and sustaining enterprise-grade data governance, quality, and compliance processes. You will partner closely with Walmart Enterprise Data Governance, Compliance, and cross-functional stakeholders to ensure Sam’s Club data assets are documented, governed, and leveraged for maximum business value.

Your first year will be focused on stabilizing processes, documenting key data assets, and building sustainable governance practices—particularly around high-priority initiatives like Member 360 and other critical data platforms. A strong understanding of data analysis and data engineering principles will help you work more effectively with technical teams, ensuring governance strategies are practical, scalable, and aligned with how data is actually stored, transformed, and used.

What you'll do...

Lead Transition and Stabilization of Key Data Assets

Within the first 30 days, assess Member 360 and related asset governance processes, identify documentation gaps, and implement immediate improvements.

Socialize governance standards across teams to ensure proper onboarding and adoption of data stewardship practices.

Establish and Document Governance Processes

Within the first 90 days, create clear, accessible documentation for all high-value data assets and governance workflows.

By year-end, deliver a comprehensive “what worked/what didn’t” governance report to inform next-year strategy.

Reduce Operational Complexity in a Fast-Moving Environment

Identify bottlenecks and risks caused by too many simultaneous initiatives; implement process controls to prevent governance issues from “getting out of hand.”

Standardize procedures so that rapid execution does not compromise data integrity.

Integrate Data Analysis & Engineering Knowledge into Governance

Apply a working knowledge of data analysis to interpret business data needs, collaborate with analytics teams, and validate that governance practices support accurate insights.

Partner with data engineering teams to ensure governance processes align with data pipelines, storage, and integration patterns.

Build and Scale a High-Performing Team

Lead 3 direct reports and recruit for an open Senior Manager role, ensuring the team has the skills and capacity to deliver governance objectives.

Establish clear KPIs for the team tied to adoption, data quality, and stakeholder satisfaction.

Drive Stakeholder Engagement and Adoption

Partner effectively with Walmart Enterprise Data Governance and Compliance, ensuring seamless alignment on policies, tools, and standards.

Achieve buy-in from business and technology leaders through regular updates, workshops, and governance advocacy.

Deliver Measurable Governance Outcomes

Reduce data quality issues in critical domains by at least 30% within the first 12 months.

Ensure at least 80% of targeted business units adopt governance practices by year-end.
