Position Summary...Join Walmart’s AI Innovation in Last-Mile Delivery

Walmart’s Last-Mile Delivery team builds intelligent systems that combine machine learning, AI, real-time data, and scalable platforms to power one of the most complex delivery networks. Spark Driver plays a critical role in Walmart’s eCommerce growth by enabling fast, flexible, and cost-effective fulfillment through data- and AI-driven decisioning.

We are seeking a Director of Data Science to lead how machine learning and data science inform decision-making, automation, and continuous improvement across Last-Mile Delivery. This role focuses on evaluating ML/AI-driven decisions, shaping intelligent business workflows, and translating operational insights into scalable automation.

The Director of Data Science provides technical leadership, develops high-performing data science teams, and partners closely with Product, Operations, and Machine Learning Engineering teams. 

What you'll do...What You’ll Do Set the data science and ML evaluation direction for Last-Mile Delivery, aligned to high-impact business priorities.Lead evaluation and continuous improvement of ML/AI-driven decisions using operational outcomes and feedback loops.Own the analytical design and validation of AI-enabled business workflows through experimentation, simulation, and scenario analysis.Translate manual operational adjustments and heuristics into structured insights and automation opportunities.Guide fine-tuning and decision-overlay logic that improves outcomes beyond base forecasts and models.Detect patterns, exceptions, and failure modes in workflows, providing root-cause insights and recovery recommendations.Partner with Product, Operations, and MLE teams to ensure insights inform scalable automation and model evolution.Coach and develop data science talent, raising technical rigor and business ownership.What You’ll BringSenior-level experience in data science, machine learning, or AI-driven decision systems.Strong foundation in statistics, experimentation, and analytical modeling, with sound technical judgment.Experience influencing outcomes through insight and partnership rather than direct system ownership.Proven ability to operate effectively in cross-functional, matrixed environments.Clear, concise communication skills with technical and business stakeholders.Track record of developing and mentoring high-performing data science teams.Nice to HaveExperience in logistics, marketplaces, or operational decision systems.Familiarity with AI-enabled automation, experimentation platforms, or scenario modeling.Strong systems-thinking mindset and comfort operating in ambiguous environments.Why This Role Matters

The annual salary range for this position is $130,000.00 - $260,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :

Option 1: Bachelors degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 6 years' experience in an analytics related field.
Option 2: Masters degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 4 years' experience in an analytics related field.
Option 3: 8 years' experience in an analytics or related field
