Job Description
The Senior Technical Writer, Software role involves overseeing research, planning, design, development, and publication of safety-critical controlled documentation. This documentation serves various customers, including pilots, program managers, IT/Networking teams, and flight system deployment teams. The role focuses on autonomous drone systems, which are complex and integrated, requiring the translation of highly technical subject matter into industry-standard materials suitable for professionals in critical industries such as Public Safety, Law Enforcement, and Utilities.
Responsibilities
Author, maintain, and publish technical documentation including user manuals, installation guides, safety instructions, product specifications, and white papers.Collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, curriculum designers, and multimedia teams to gather requirements and translate technical content into accessible formats.Build and manage a portfolio of structured content for various users, including operators, technicians, and training staff.Ensure documentation meets industrial and regulatory compliance standards such as FAA, OSHA, NIST, and IEEE.Lead the development of 2D/3D visuals and graphics to support technical documentation and training content.Maintain document control protocols and version tracking in accordance with best practices and regulatory requirements.Represent the technical writing function in stakeholder meetings and communicate effectively with leaders and cross-functional partners.Contribute to the evolution of internal documentation processes and tools with a future path toward managing a growing content team.Essential Skills
3–6 years of experience (5+ preferred) in technical writing, particularly in safety-critical, industrial, or defense-focused environments.Experience working with technical teams to convert PRDs, user stories, flight test results, diagnostics, analytics, UI wireframes, and system limitations into end-user documentation.Ability to author across multiple content types, including manuals, reference guides, white papers, 2D/3D visual content, and interactive training assets.Deep understanding of documentation control processes and content lifecycle management.Familiarity with industrial regulations and standards including FAA, OSHA, IEEE, ASCE, and NIST.Professional conduct and experience working with cross-functional stakeholders, including executives.Comfortable operating independently and owning end-to-end documentation projects.Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with XML, content management systems, Git, Jira, SharePoint.Work Environment
This position is onsite in San Mateo.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of San Mateo, CA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $45.00 - $50.00/hr.
