The Amazon Web Services (AWS) Sales, Marketing, and Global Services (SMGS) mission is to enable the AWS field organization to be the most efficient and effective in the world. Our SMGS Security Escalations team builds and maintains org-wide mechanisms to inspect security within SMGS. We identify security challenges, catalyze action to build or improve security mechanisms, and measure security outcomes within SMGS in order to achieve the security outcomes that AWS customers expect. SMGS is looking for a talented Security Engineer, Incident Response who possesses a strong expertise in software and systems, combined with a genuine enthusiasm for security and cloud computing.
Our team works on Internal Security within the Global Services, Security (GSS) team, a part of Amazon Web Services, leverages the expertise and ingenuity of our builders to establish scalable security solutions for both internal and external customers that drive business outcomes. Our goal of securing the world’s workloads and building a brighter future for humanity requires us to focus on reliable delivery of bar raising security outcomes and investment in security mechanisms and automation on behalf of our customers.
SMGS Security Escalations Security Escalations makes broad use of AWS platforms and technologies including cloud services, identity and access management, big data and analytics, all operating at massive scale with consistent growth. SMGS Security helps internal teams with each step of deployment and leads inspection of SMGS’s security posture. Our highly collaborative team is committed to each team member’s growth as our business and team grows. We require engineers to work tactically with both internal and external stakeholders to solve security challenges at massive scale, and to think strategically to develop and implement changes to drive automation, scalability and continuous progress for the organization.
We're seeking a talented security focused System Development Engineer to join our Infrastructure Security team. In this role, you'll combine security expertise with data-driven automation to protect AWS's global infrastructure. You'll build sophisticated tooling that automates the detection and resolution of security issues, while working closely with data scientists to extract meaningful insights from security events and incident data. Your primary focus will be developing and enhancing automated security solutions that operate at AWS scale. By analyzing incident data and collaborating with data science teams, you'll identify patterns and trends that drive improvements in our automation and processes, transforming security event data into actionable intelligence, developing metrics and dashboards to track security performance.
You'll participate in cross-functional project teams to expand our security tooling across Amazon, ensuring our solutions scale effectively throughout the organization. This role offers exceptional growth potential within a supportive team environment, where you'll have the opportunity to make a significant impact on cloud security while working with cutting-edge technologies and massive datasets.
The ideal candidate will bring strong software development skills, experience with data analysis, and a solid understanding of security principles. Key Responsibilities:
* System Development and Automation:
* Design and build advanced tooling to automate the detection and resolution of security and infrastructure issues within AWS and Amazon
* Continuously improve existing automation, tooling, and processes based on incident data and emerging threats
* Expand the use of your team's tooling to additional areas across Amazon, driving efficiency and security at scale
* Incident Response and Analysis:
* Analyze incident data to drive improvements in automation and processes, aiming to reduce incident duration or prevent future occurrences
* Collaborate closely with data scientists to extract meaningful insights from security events and identify trends
* Cross-team Collaboration:
* Work closely with the incident response team to understand and address complex security issues within the organization
* Partner with data scientists to develop data-driven approaches to security automation and threat detection
* Participate in project teams to expand the reach and impact of your security and automation tools across Amazon
* Leadership and Mentorship:
* Provide technical leadership during critical security events
* Mentor team members in security best practices and automation techniques
* Contribute to the development of standard operating procedures and best practices
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
* Experience in automating, deploying, and supporting large-scale infrastructure
* Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Python, Ruby, Golang, Java, C++, C#, Rust
* Experience with Linux/Unix
* Experience with CI/CD pipelines build processes
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with distributed systems at scale

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $116,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $201,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
