Job Summary
The Survey Crew Chief works closely with the survey, engineering, and operations teams to perform field surveying services for private, commercial, and public projects. Responsibilities include boundary, topographic, and ALTA/NSPS surveys; construction staking; elevation certificates; and recorded document research. The Survey Crew Chief is adaptable, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment while transitioning between projects.
Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities
+ Performs field collection of boundary survey data under the supervision of a Professional Surveyor
+ Collects topographic survey data
+ Performs construction staking and related calculations for private, commercial, and government projects
+ Utilizes AutoCAD and Trimble Business Center
+ Collects, downloads, and manages survey data
+ Coordinates with project superintendents and foremen to resolve discrepancies in drawings, staking, and site conditions
+ Operates a company vehicle and maintains a valid driver's license
+ Stays current on surveying technology, equipment, and best practices
+ Exercises discretion regarding project confidentiality

+ Assists others in department as needed
+ Performs other related duties as assigned
Required Skills and Abilities
+ Demonstrates proven experience with modern surveying technology (GPS, Robotic Total Station, Data Collectors)
+ Displays strong understanding of surveying software
+ Ability to work independently and collaboratively under pressure
+ Exhibits excellent communication skills across all levels of the organization
+ Ability to read and interpret construction plans and identify discrepancies
+ Strong data collection, analysis, and field documentation skills
+ Solid math skills, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
+ Strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities
+ Ability to manage multiple priorities and tight deadlines
+ Maintains acceptable attendance, punctuality, reliability, and work ethic
+ Ability to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours when needed
+ Complies with company Drug-Free & Alcohol-Free Workplace policies
+ Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
+ Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision
Education and Experience
+ Associate's or Technical degree in Surveying, CAD, Construction, Engineering, or a related field (preferred)
+ 3+ years of experience in the construction industry; heavy highway experience preferred
+ Survey Technician Certification or willingness to obtain certification
+ Professional Surveyor licensure (or eligibility) is a plus
+ Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
Physical Requirements
+ Lifting/Carrying: Up to 50 lbs frequently
+ Pushing/Pulling: Up to 50 lbs frequently
+ Driving: Regular driving of automatic and possibly standard transmission vehicles
+ Movement Requirements: Frequent standing, walking, and keyboarding; occasional sitting, bending, squatting, kneeling, twisting, climbing, crawling, and reaching above shoulder level
+ Use of Hands: Frequent use of hands for keyboarding and handling materials
Working Environment
+ Individual will be working in a field and office environment (85/15), with a primary emphasis on survey related field work.
+ Frequent exposure to outdoor weather conditions including extreme heat and cold, dust, wet surfaces, uneven terrain, and standing on concrete
+ Works long hours and potentially 6 days a week, with the understanding nights could be needed
+ Travels up to 90-mile radius from the main office
+ Interaction with internal departments (e.g., Safety, Accounting, Field Operations) and external partners (e.g., clients, municipalities, subcontractors)
Supervisory Responsibilities
+ Indirect: Where applicable, directs and oversees staff members regarding construction, operations, and/or tasks and assignments at a project site.
