Summary:
The House Supervisor at Robert Packer Hospital provides oversight for the hospital in the absence of department managers. They represent the Hospital Administration and leadership supporting the Mission, Vision, and Values of the organization. The House Supervisor provides the leadership for the safe care of the patients, visitors, and staff. This includes patient throughput and placement, crisis management, staffing/scheduling, and emergency situational management. The House Supervisor reports to the Manager of the Staffing and Scheduling Operations.
Experience:
A minimum of five years RN experience requiredPreviously demonstrated leadership and effective communication requiredExperience in a high acuity setting with strong clinical judgement, critical thinking skills and attention to detailEducation:
BSN - Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing preferred.
Licenses:
RN-PA - State of Pennsylvania Registered Nursing License
BLS - Basic Life Support required. ACLS - Advanced Life Support preferred.
Certification preferred.
Essential Functions:
Provide leadership to promote safe, effective, and efficient care according to best practice.Act as the established contact and resource for hospital employees or other external persons. Act as a consultant regarding clinical, administrative, emergency, or legal aspects of patient care. Confer with the administrative person /s on call when necessary.Assume administrative responsibilities in the absence of Hospital administration and leadership members.Participate in risk management and crisis intervention by acting as a liaison to patients and / or families in times of crisis. Respond and assume appropriate role in emergency codes. Oversee and assist with the placement of patients using the right patient, right unit methodologyEnforce regulatory compliance using hospital, state, and federal guidelinesProvide support and be a resource especially for emergency and confrontational situationsFoster professional nurse empowered decision-making, accountability, and autonomy in nursing practicesRepresent the organization in a professional, courteous manner to patients, families, co-workers, and other health care team members. Be sensitive to how verbal and non-verbal communication is perceived. Always maintain confidentiality in compliance with HIPPA.Demonstrate effective communication, written and verbalAlways demonstrate professionalism and respectProvide detailed handoff to oncoming House SupervisorDeliver updates to Administration, leaders and managers on situations or events to ensure appropriate follow-upEscalate situations to the appropriate leader for direction, support and backup as neededProvide conflict management techniques in emotionally charged situations to de-escalate, prevent increased escalation and potential harmComplete all required documentation needed for validation, improvement, and data collectionEnsure completion of the death certificate process for patients expiring at RPH.Promote patient satisfactionServe as an advocate for the patient in difficult situations and in the clinical management of their carePrioritize and expedite all communications in an appropriate and timely manner.Perform service recovery as neededBe visible to the patients and their familiesInitiate and lead staffing for the inpatient unitsContinually review and compare census / acuity levels on patient units to staffing. Ensure staffing level is appropriate. Adjust to patient needs and budgetary constraints as necessary. Review staffing for the next shift: following guidelines, create a staffing plan for the inpatient units in the hospitalDays – lead the staffing huddle and with the assistance of the managers, create a staffing plan for the next couple of shifts, especially if there is low/high staffing Nights – utilizing guidelines and the staffing plan created at the huddle, make changes as needed for a safe, balanced planEnsure the staffing plan is the safest plan possible, even if there is conflict with your decisionsBe a financial steward for the hospitalIdentify areas of waste and notify the appropriate leaderFollow the algorithm when calling people off or letting them go home early for low censusGuide patient placement for right patient, right unitCollaborate with the Pulse Center for proper placement of patients.Prioritize the data and information collected based on the patient’s immediate condition or anticipated needs. Work through potential risks or barriers to getting the patient here in a safe and timely manner.Working with the Pulse Center, coordinate and arrange emergent and non-emergent patient transfer to and from Robert Packer Hospital. Assist with the efficient and appropriate patient bed assignments while monitoring on-going bed availability. Coordinate patient flow throughout Robert Packer Hospital while collaborating with the Pulse Center, leadership, administration, and staff.Assist with inputting patient placement in Epic, when neededAssist with Inputting transfers in Epic, when neededHave a significant presence in the hospitalRound on the unitsObtain a pulse of the units to mitigate barriers for patient care and placement Identify discharged patients to facilitate timely discharges and on-going patient placementEncourage and facilitate use of the discharge loungeAssist with obtaining necessary patient supplies as needed on off hours.Assist with completion of transportation vouchers as needed.Create relationships with the staff and patients to ensure support is availableEducate, and mentor especially when policies and best practices are being followedOther Duties:
