The Sterile Processing Department Supervisor continuously assesses activities of SPD Team associated in the processing of reusable medical devices, distribution of procedural supplies, and deployment of patient care equipment. Provides subject matter expertise and evidence-based practice to support the department's operational improvement. The SPD Supervisor assists the assistant manager to evaluate and implement educational programs for the department.
Principal Accountabilities:
+ Provides SPD team members (internal and external) with educational support, including needs assessments.
+ Provides standardized education in area of expertise, as well as general education including but not limited to orientation, annual competency assessment, regulatory, accreditation and certification.
+ Develops and communicates a full range of educational and quality monitoring programs to assist SPD Assist Manager/ SPD Manager, Lead Technicians, Sterile Processing Technicians, Materials Management Representatives, and customers of SPD. Provides in-service as needed.
+ Supports the maintenance and revision of policies, procedures, best practice and implements specific recommendations which includes multi-discipline and multi-department collaboration.
+ Supports system software solution upgrades, standardized information accuracy, and assistance with clinical orientation to the Instrument Tracking System and Loaner Solution.
+ Involved in data maintenance assisting with the standardization and implementation of the Instrument Tracking System.
+ Ability to interpret and apply the standards/regulations of the AORN (Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses), HSPA (Hospital Sterile Processing Association), AAMI (Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation®), APIC (Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology), CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services), TJC (The Joint Commission) and CDC (Centers for Disease Control), and other regulatory organizations into the policies and procedures of the SPD and translate them into successful regulatory audits.
+ Demonstrates knowledge and competency in preparing instruments, equipment, and supplies for SPD customers with adherence to the principles of sterile techniques.
+ Staff competency development and assessment, review of event reports, tracking and trending of issues in the department, creation, and implementation of action items to improve quality and create high reliability, customer service and departmental efficiencies.
+ Coaches team members appropriately and effectively. Able to maintain, prioritize, and expedite workflow.
+ Manages team member relations including performance management, employee engagement, and conflict management.
+ Performs and oversees, in collaboration with Lead Technicians, in team member scheduling and assignments adjusting according to work volume and staff developmental needs.
+ Communicates effectively with various audiences using the most appropriate method for the situation.
+ Proficient computer skills using Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel, Power Point, and SPD applications.
+ Provide a vital role in controlling cost to ensure the department aligns with AH (Atlantic Health) goals and strategic plans.
+ Assesses and escalates to leadership the needs for systems/equipment/supplies purchases, monitors usage, and oversees proper working order and/or stock supplies, including vendor management.
+ As part of the annual evaluation process, submits a list of year-end accomplishments and goals reviewed and mutually agreed upon for the coming year.
+ Personal/ Professional growth will be maintained through AH OD classes, in-service education, conferences, and literature.
+ Must attend required number of mandatory meetings.
Education/Experience
+ High School Graduate or GED required.
+ Graduate from an accredited Sterile Processing program required.
+ CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) or CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution) certification required.
+ CHL (Certified Healthcare Leader) or CSPM (Certified Sterile Processing Manager) certification preferred.
+ 3 plus years experience in sterile processing, including at least 2 years in a lead role that included training, staff development, competency development, process improvement, quality monitoring, and maintaining standards according to the regulations.
+ Physical Requirements: Must be able to push/pull/lift to 35lbs.
+ Must be able to tolerate prolonged periods of standing and /or walking.
+ Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word etc.)
+ Ability to read, write and speak English fluently.
