About Next Gen Career Pathway’s Summer Internships: The 2026 College Summer Internship Program offers students nationwide a chance to gain practical experience while exploring careers in the water industry. Each intern will have a Valley Water staff mentor and will receive professional development training, participate in networking events, and prepare a capstone presentation at the end of the program. Although some positions in the program will follow a hybrid format, with a mix of in-office and remote work based on business needs, other roles may require interns to work on-site full-time in a lab, office, or field setting, as specified in the job postings. About The Budget and Financial Analyses, Financial Planning and Revenue Collection, and the Treasury and Debt Management Unit: The selected intern for this internship will have a unique opportunity to work within three (3) units - the Budget and Financial Analyses, Financial Planning and Revenue Collection, and the Treasury and Debt Management Unit all belonging to Valley Water’s Financial Planning & Management Services Division. Below is a summary of the three units. Budget and Financial Analyses provide timely, accurate financial information and analysis throughout the fiscal year. The unit captures the cost of resources required to manage, plan, and implement Valley Water–wide processes, culminating in the annual operating and capital budget; providing Valley Water–wide financial analysis and high-level monitoring of financial results; and ensures financial information provided to the Board, public, and staff is accurate, reliable, and compliant with Valley Water policy. Financial Planning develops and manages long-term financial plans and forecasts and leads the groundwater production charge-setting process, including preparation of the annual Protection and Augmentation of Water Supplies (PAWS) report. Revenue Collection administers water revenues and property taxes/assessments for Valley Water, including charges for groundwater, treated, recycled, and surface water, as well as voter-approved taxes and assessments. Treasury and Debt Management oversee Valley Water’s investment portfolio (over $650 million), debt portfolio (over $1 billion), and more than $30 million in annual grant reimbursements. The unit manages an $82 million annual debt service budget, prepares all legally required bond and regulatory reports, ensures compliance with securities laws, and leads financial advisory and debt issuance activities for large-scale capital projects in coordination with external advisors and counsel. INTERNSHIP LOCATION STATUS:This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule, typically working 40% remote and 60% onsite. For hybrid work, intern must perform their work in the state of California within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in (San Jose, California) by their start date. Required License or Certificate DESIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES + Students pursuing a degree in public administration, business administration, accounting, finance, or a related field. + Interest in monitoring and analyzing large sets of financial data to assist with company wide budgeting materials, cost projections, and financial planning. + Interest in organizing tasks, managing timelines, tracking deliverables, and supporting multiple projects simultaneously. + Experience with or interest in learning common office and collaboration tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Smartsheet, DocuSign, or similar software; interest in learning financial or grants management systems is a plus. + Interest in developing professional communication skills, including collaborating with cross-functional teams, coordinating with internal stakeholders, and supporting communications with external partners or funding agencies. + Ability or interest in working both independently and as part of a team, including organizing information, analyzing findings, and sharing updates or summaries with supervisors or project teams. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND INTERNSHIP TASKS (Representative duties include, but are not limited to): + Support administrative, program, budgeting, or planning projects by assisting staff with research, data gathering, and documentation under guidance. + Assist with collecting, organizing, and analyzing quantitative information to support program, financial, or operational activities. + Conduct background research on policies, procedures, regulations, or best practices and summarize findings for staff review. + Support project coordination by tracking tasks, timelines, and deliverables using established tools and templates. + Participate in meetings, project discussions, or stakeholder engagements as appropriate, and assist with notetaking or follow-up items. + Assist with maintaining project files, records, databases, or other documentation in accordance with unit procedures. + Collaborate with staff across teams or departments to support assigned work and program objectives. Selection Process ELIGIBILITY: + Undergraduate applicants must be enrolled in an accredited community college or college/university and have completed at least two full-time years of study (i.e., entering their third/rising third or fourth year) by Fall 2026, or have graduated within the past six months. + Graduate applicants must be enrolled in an accredited graduate program at a college or university in Fall 2026 or have completed their degree within the past six months. + Proof of enrollment will be required prior to the start of the assignment. + Applicants must be able to work full-time (40 hours/week) during the College Summer Internship Program. + Only applicants who have not participated in a Valley Water College Summer Internship Program before will be considered. + Valley Water requires interns to work within 150 miles of the Valley Water office they are to report to by their start date.
