Job Title: SUE TechnicianJob Description

As a SUE Technician, you will work primarily outdoors as part of a small team or crew, focusing on underground utility location related to the design of new roads, buildings, and utility master plans. You will learn to mitigate risks associated with damage to underground utilities during construction due to faulty design from incomplete existing condition information. You will contribute to the creation of GIS grade maps for cities, counties, and private institutions, with all tools and equipment provided, including a company vehicle. This role involves travel around the southeast, with opportunities to visit other offices in California, Oregon, Texas, Colorado, and Florida. The Utility Services Department promotes from within and provides training for suitable candidates.

ResponsibilitiesDesignate all subsurface utilities using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and sonde equipment.Visit project sites to identify and verify existing utilities.Pair count and positively identify utility owners and cable sizes.Assist with the operation and maintenance of a vacuum excavation truck.Understand the quality levels of SUE and differentiate between each one.Read, comprehend, and interpret utility records.Work autonomously, as well as lead and direct workload in the field.Provide quality assurance and quality control on utility services technicians’ work.Communicate effectively with staff and onsite clients.Maintain updated knowledge of new technologies and techniques.Assist the Group Manager with weekly administrative tasks such as hours, mileage, and expense reports.Provide training and reinforcement of standards for field staff.Enforce company policies regarding safety, protocol, and procedure in the field.Assist with technical tasks as needed, including AutoCAD and Microstation.Essential SkillsHigh School Diploma/GED required; Associate’s degree preferred.5+ years of utility designation experience.Must possess or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license prior to employment.Ability to travel up to 60% of the time.Microsoft Excel experience; ability to learn and understand new software.Prior survey experience.Experience in utility locating, utility industry, surveying, blueprint reading, subsurface utility engineering, utility relocation, and utility distribution.Additional Skills & QualificationsFamiliarity with iPad or tablet is a plus.UTA Certified Professional certification preferred.Work Environment

This role involves outdoor work under various environmental conditions, including wet, humid, extreme cold and heat, dusty, and noisy work environments. Work primarily takes place in the field, requiring long-term standing and frequent walking, and includes common hazards found at construction and project sites. The physical demands include carrying, lifting, and pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally, walking over rough and uneven terrain, and standing for 10-12 hours a day on occasion. Must have the ability to see, smell, hear, talk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, twist, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, sit, stand, and walk. Weekend, overtime, and overnight work and travel may be required. Additional physical duties may be necessary.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Cary, NC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $30.00/hr.
