Job Title: Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Technician

Job Description

We are seeking Subsurface Utility Engineering Technicians to support roadway, bridge, and urban infrastructure projects throughout the Atlanta metro area and across Georgia. This role is ideal for candidates with utility locating, vacuum excavation, and field construction experience who are looking to grow into a SUE Technician or Locator role. You will work as part of a 2–5 person field crew, performing EM and GPR utility designating, vacuum excavation, documentation, and coordination in active Civil Construction and Transportation corridors. The position is an outdoors, hands‑on field role with access to company trucks, paid drive time, and long-term GDOT work.

Responsibilities

Perform electromagnetic (EM) and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) utility designating.Locate and identify all underground utilities including electric, gas, water, sewer, telecom, and fiber.Apply industry best practices for SUE Quality Level B (QL‑B) investigations.Operate or assist with vacuum excavation (VAC truck) potholing activities.Expose, verify, and document utility depth, material, size, and alignment.Support SUE Quality Level A (QL‑A) investigations.Create clear field sketches, measurements, and records.Document daily activities and field conditions.Perform records research and utility plan review.Communicate findings to project managers, surveyors, engineers, and CEI staff.Operate company trucks and field equipment safely and professionally.Perform basic maintenance on vacuum excavation and locating equipment.Follow traffic control, job site safety, and GDOT standards.Work outdoors in varying weather and traffic environments.

Essential Skills

Proficient with Electromagnetic (EM) locating.Proficient with Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR).Experience with vacuum excavation (potholing) using VAC trucks.Solid experience with systematic locating and designation of all utilities.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

Experience in utility locating and designation.Ability to create clear field sketches and documents.Comfortable working in traffic, construction, and utility corridors.Willingness to drive to multiple job sites as needed.

Work Environment

The role operates primarily in the field in varying weather and traffic environments, and requires travel to multiple job sites as needed. Company vehicles are provided, and drive time is paid once departing the office. The work involves hands-on tasks with access to company trucks and long-term GDOT work. The position supports roadways, bridges, interchanges, and mega-corridor projects. You will work within a team of 2-5 person crews.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Duluth, GA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $30.00/hr.
