Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Student Intern.

In this role, the successful candidate Dr. Joseph Palamar is seeking undergrad students to work on his epidemiology studies examining self-reported drug use among nightclub and dance festival attendees. The studies are funded by the National Institute of Drug Abuse.
The ideal candidates are committed, highly motivated individuals who can work effectively, independently, and in small teams. Students enrolled at NYU are encouraged to apply. The candidates will serve as recruiters who will survey individuals about to enter nightclubs and electronic dance music (EDM) dance festivals typically late at night. Recruiters are also needed during daytime hours to survey students near college campuses. Nightclubs and colleges of focus will be in the New York tristate area (including some cities in New Jersey and Connecticut) so candidates with access to a car are preferred although this is not required. In addition to helping administer surveys, student interns will also try to obtain voluntary saliva samples from a subset of participants. Familiarity with the EDM scene is a plus. Outgoing individuals who are comfortable approaching and speaking to people they have never met strongly preferred. Interns will work in small groups to ensure safety.

Job Responsibilities:

Assist research assistants in approaching individuals about to enter nightclubs and dance festivals and briefly determine eligibility and interest in participation in the study. Assist research assistants in approaching individuals near college campuses and briefly determine eligibility and interest in participation in the study. Help oversee administration of the survey (conducted via tablet) and pay participants. If the participant volunteers to provide a saliva sample (to be analyzed at a later date), assist in the collection, labeling, and tracking of the sample. Help track recruitment, data collection progress, and participant payments using spreadsheets.  Attend short periodic team meetings to discuss progress.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Bachelors degree in public health, psychology, sociology, or related preferred, but not required
Previous work experience in an office or research lab environment
Highly skilled user of Word and Excel
Excellent English and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program
Demonstrated interest in the epidemiology of drug use and/or risky sexual behavior
Familiarity with EDM and the dance festival scene strongly preferred

Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $16.50 – $16.50 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
