Northrop Grumman Space Systems—Launch and Missile Defense Systems offers an excellent opportunity for a Staff Software Engineer – Software Architect to join our team of skilled and diverse professionals. This role, based in Huntsville, AL, is vital in supporting the U.S. President, the Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels.

Relocation assistance is not provided for this position, as it requires on-site work with no remote options available.

Position Overview:

The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program is a critical part of the Missile Defense System. It provides an essential operational platform that enables the U.S. president, the secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and tactical levels to systematically plan ballistic missile defense operations, monitor battle progress, and actively manage networked sensors and weapon systems to achieve global and regional mission objectives.

C2BMC offers a layered missile defense capability, delivering an optimized response to threats across all ranges and flight phases. It acts as a force multiplier by connecting, integrating, and synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations both worldwide and locally to enhance overall performance. Additionally, C2BMC is a vital component of all ground and flight tests that verify and demonstrate the missile defense system's current and future capabilities.

The candidate will join the C2BMC software architecture team on the Regional Applications Agile Release Train (ART).

Essential Functions:

Defining and overseeing the implementation of the software architecture for a Java-based missile defense command and control system, ensuring the architecture aligns with the design principles of the C2BMC programProviding direct technical support to the Chief Engineer and Chief Architect and coordinating across engineering disciplines (e.g., Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Integration & Test, Operations & Sustainment)Examples of tasks to be carried out include:Perform trade studies and analysis for current and future C2BMC development activitiesMaintain software architecture artifacts for the ARTOversee the development of ART software designAssess the ramifications and impacts of proposed architectural changes on the software baselinesAnalyze system performance, including quantifying performance, identifying bottlenecks, and measuring throughputSupport briefings, presentations, and demonstrations to the customerAssist with analyzing, designing, and implementing cybersecurity requirements in softwareCollaborating with other program architects to implement enterprise architecture goals and guidanceUnderstanding modern software architecture paradigms like event-driven and service-oriented architectureWill be an effective communicator who bridges engineering disciplines, customer and program leadership, and individual contributors to develop solutionsWill conduct trade studies and analysis across software engineering disciplinesWill provide architecture development and coordination, establishing the relationships between internal and external componentsWill communicate architectural intent and constraints to a diverse group of customers, developers, engineers, subject matter experts, and users

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline preferred from an accredited university and 12 years of related experience, or a Master’s degree and 10 years of experience, or a PhD and 8 years of experience, or 16 years of related experience in lieu of a degree may be considered.Applicants must have a current, active in-scope DoD-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start with the ability to obtain Top Secret security clearance and the eligibility to be cleared with SCI clearanceCurrent DoD 8140 certification at IAT Level II or higher (Security+ CE, CCNA-Security, CND, CySA+, CISSP, CISA, etc.), which is required to startWillingness and ability to travel up to 10% to support business needsMust have experience in software engineering and architecture for large software systems, including:Experience in developing software architecture and design for large-scale distributed systems that ensure scalability, extensibility, maintainability, and reliabilityExperience in performing logical and physical modelingExperience with the Java programming language and developing software throughout the entire software lifecycle

Preferred Qualifications:

A current and active in-scope DoD-issued Top Secret Security Clearance with eligibility for SCI accessFamiliarity with:Information Assurance (IA) and Cybersecurity principlesStatic and dynamic security assessment tools (e.g., SonarQube, OWASP ZAP)Secure Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs)Secure system architectureKnowledge and experience in virtualization, containerization, and orchestrationAbility to implement automation and CI/CD pipelines to enforce standards, ensuring quality and test repeatabilityPrevious experience with missile defense and command & control systems is highly preferredExperience with Test Driven Design (TDD) methodology is highly preferred

Primary Level Salary Range: $163,200.00 - $244,800.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
