Staff Embodied Carbon & Materials Specialist - Environmental Services (Multiple Locations)
**Description** Burns & McDonnell is seeking an Embodied Carbon & Materials Specialist to join our growing sustainability team. This role will support project teams by performing whole building life cycle assessments, reviewing drawings and specifications, and guiding responsible material selection and design alternatives. In addition, the position will assist with LEED and Envision certifications including material submittal reviews and submission documentation. **Key Responsibilities:** + Conduct whole building life cycle and/or embodied carbon assessments using tools such as EC3 and OneClick. + Review building drawings, specifications, and submittals to identify opportunities for low carbon and responsible material selection. + Track, document, and support the submission of LEED and Envision credits, particularly Materials & Resources credits and construction-phase documentation. + Provide recommendations and coordination to design, engineering, and construction teams on low-carbon products, structural/material efficiencies, and procurement strategies. + Coordinate with project teams to integrate solutions into formal design documents, collect material data, and confirm compliance with sustainability goals. + Educate project teams on embodied carbon concepts and basics of integration into design and construction projects. + Maintain an awareness of evolving low carbon materials, responsible material certifications, and procurement. + Other duties, as assigned. **Qualifications** + Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Architecture, Construction, Sustainability, or related field from an accredited program required. + 4 years of related professional experience required. + Experience working on design and construction projects highly preferred. Experience working with Whole Building Life Cycle Assessments (WBLCA’s) preferred. + LEED AP and/or Envision SP certifications preferred. + Background in structural engineering or architecture preferred. + Experience supporting LEED and/or Envision project documentation preferred. + Excellent written & verbal communication skills and experience communicating with technical disciplines. + Basic knowledge of environment/sustainable business practices, regulatory/statutory dynamics, and current trends in the profession. + Knowledge of the integration of embodied carbon assessment and reduction into a standard design and construction process and timeline strongly preferred. + Knowledge of sustainable construction practices, low-carbon materials, and material transparency resources (EPDs, HPDs, Declare labels) preferred. + Experience using embodied carbon tools for project delivery (EC3, OneClick LCA) strongly preferred. + Deep familiarity with embodied carbon and WBLCA concepts strongly preferred. + Ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering drawings strongly preferred. + Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail. + Ability to apply intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad assignments and devise new approaches to problems encountered.
