The University of Miami/UHealth Department of SCCC has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Senior Research Associate 1 to work at the UHealth medical campus in Miami, Fl. CORE JOB SUMMARY The Senior Research Associate 1 provides laboratory-based support for the University’s research activities by tackling the more specialized and complex projects and experiments. Additionally, the incumbent leverages his/her expertise in training and mentoring department staff, students, and less experienced research associates. DEPARTMENT ADENDUM Department Specific Functions The Senior Research Associate 1 supports the implementation of complex cancer behavioral health, environmental health and epidemiology studies within the Firefighter Cancer Initiative (FCI). The incumbent coordinates multiple projects, supervises junior research staff, and ensures study protocols are implemented with fidelity in fire stations, firefighter events, community and clinical settings. The position requires substantial independent judgment, advanced communication skills, and cultural competence to support firefighter partnership research efforts. The Senior Research Associate 1 is responsible for participant engagement, data collection, and project documentation. The role also includes mentoring junior staff, supporting stakeholder partnerships, and contributing to research dissemination efforts. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Research Coordination, Implementation, and Leadership + Recruit, consent, and enroll eligible research participants following IRB-approved procedures in fire stations, firefighter events, community and clinic-based settings to meet the needs of operational demands. + Deliver research services and technical assistance for cancer-related projects, including participant recruitment and retention, data collection, survey development, and the creation of culturally appropriate materials. + Monitor data integrity and ensure that all project activities adhere to protocol and regulatory requirements. + Works closely with Principal Investigators and managers to develop and refine study protocols, data collection instruments, recruitment plans, and timelines. + Acts as the primary point of contact for internal and external stakeholders, including collaborators, Principal Investigators, and regulatory staff. + Oversees study implementation across multiple fire service departments/organizations, community and clinical sites. + Coordinates project timelines, staffing plans and site logistics. + Works on the development of study flyers, outreach materials, data collection instruments, consent forms and protocols. + Collaborates with investigators on protocol adaptations and operational planning. + Monitors recruitment progress, study deliverables, and data quality. Participant and Fire Service Engagement + Establish and sustain a robust network of community stakeholders and partners to support collaborative, firefighter research initiatives. + Serve as a liaison between investigators and firefighter agencies to ensure cultural competence and trust in the research processes. + Conducts periodic performance assessments and supports the professional development of team members. + Engages firefighter partners and represents FCI at firefighter events and advisory board meetings. + Coordinates and collects feedback from members of the fire service. Data Collection Documentation and Quality Assurance + Leads data management efforts including database design, quality control, integrity monitoring and qualitative and quantitative data analysis. + Conducts quantitative and qualitative data analysis using research techniques, or coordinates with analysts/statisticians as needed for project reporting. + Coordinates the work of entry level research associates to ensure data is being collected effectively for assigned research studies. + Oversees timely entry and maintenance of participant records in electronic systems such as REDCap, Qualtrics and Velos, and ensures data completeness. + Prepares enrollment summaries, interim reports, and final project deliverables for internal use and reporting to FCI leaders. + If certified/trained in phlebotomy, performs venipuncture and collects, processes and ships laboratory blood samples in accordance with study protocols. + Prepares documentation for audits and monitoring visits. + Conducts and oversees quantitative and qualitative data collection. + Provides protocol training for designated research studies. + Prepares and submits study modifications to the IRB. + Maintains the study regulatory binder. Administrative & Operational Duties + Works on scheduling and leading team meetings, preparing agendas, taking detailed meeting minutes, and ensuring follow-up on action items. + Monitors study supply inventory and assists other team members with ordering study-related supplies. + If certified/trained in phlebotomy, performs venipuncture blood collections and collects laboratory samples in accordance with study protocols. + Collects, processes, packs, and ships specimens (blood, saliva, urine, fecal, etc.) according to protocol, applicable standards and regulations, and coordinates with appropriate laboratories for drop off and storage. + Adapts to dynamic project needs, including travel to research sites and occasional evening/weekend work. + Supports manuscript preparations, abstract submissions, and conference logistics. Training and Team Integration + Participates in FCI-led trainings and meeting on FCI topics to team members, collaborators, research participants, fire service partners. + Engages in professional development and learning activities to enhance research capabilities. + Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members to ensure timely and high-quality execution of research activities. + Training and supervision of lower-level research associates and research trainees. + Supports managers with team onboarding and continuing education activities. + Provide project-specific guidance and oversee quality control for field and office activities. + Ensures consistency and standardization of study implementation across the team. Supervision and Mentorship + Assists managers in direct supervision to Research Associates, Support Specialists, and trainees. + Assists other team members and managers in assigning tasks, monitors performance, and provides ongoing coaching and feedback. + Assists staff and managers in field-based training on recruitment, data collection, and engagement protocols. + Supports professional development and cross-training of staff. Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree in Public Health, Behavioral Science, Environmental Health, Epidemiology, Psychology, or a related field is required. Preferred Qualifications + Experience: Minimum of 1-2 years of research experience preferred, preferably in environmental health, community-engagement or health disparities research preferred. + Strong understanding of research methodology, cancer epidemiology, environmental health, health promotion, and social determinants of health. + Experience with data collection platforms (REDCap, Qualtrics), and data analysis tools (SPSS, SAS, R, NVivo). + Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). + Familiarity with qualitative and quantitative research methods and analysis software is preferred. + Fluency in English (oral and written) is required. + Experience in manuscript writing and research findings presentation. #LI-YC1 The University of Miami offers competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, tuition remission and more.
