Sr. Optical Metrology Engineer
Description About the Role Amazon Devices & Services is seeking a Senior Optical Metrology Engineer to drive optical measurement strategy and execution across our portfolio of consumer electronics products including Echo Show, Ring cameras, Fire tablets, Kindle, and emerging device categories. You will be the technical authority on optical characterization, establishing measurement methodologies that ensure world-class image quality, display performance, and sensor accuracy. Key Responsibilities Optical Measurement & Characterization • Design and implement comprehensive optical test methodologies for cameras, displays, projectors, and optical sensors across the product development lifecycle • Develop automated measurement systems for image quality assessment (MTF, distortion, color accuracy, dynamic range, noise characterization) • Establish display metrology protocols (luminance uniformity, color gamut, viewing angle, contrast ratio, flicker) • Create optical alignment and calibration procedures for multi-camera systems and depth sensors Quality & Standards Leadership • Define optical performance specifications, host demo and validate acceptance criteria in collaboration with Product, Design, and Engineering teams • Drive root cause analysis for optical defects and performance issues using advanced measurement techniques • Establish correlation between subjective image quality assessments and objective measurements • Develop failure analysis methodologies for optical components and modules Infrastructure & Tooling • Build and maintain state-of-the-art optical measurement labs with equipment including spectroradiometers, goniophotometers, integrating spheres, and imaging test targets • Develop custom measurement software and automation scripts (Python, MATLAB) for high-throughput testing • Implement statistical process control (SPC) for optical manufacturing quality monitoring • Create measurement uncertainty budgets and validate measurement system capability (GR&R studies) Cross-Functional Collaboration • Partner with Display/optical/advance manufacturing Engineering teams to optimize optical designs for manufacturability and performance • Work with Contract Manufacturers to implement optical testing at production scale • Support Product teams with competitive benchmarking and optical performance trade-off analysis Innovation & Continuous Improvement • Research emerging optical measurement technologies and integrate into development workflows • Publish internal technical standards and best practices documentation • Mentor junior engineers on optical measurement principles and techniques • Drive cost reduction initiatives through measurement optimization and automation Work Environment • This role is based in Taipei • Requires travel to manufacturing sites (20~50%) • Hands-on lab work with optical equipment and prototypes • Collaborative environment working across hardware, software, and product teams Why Amazon Devices?
