**Position Summary**
Underwriting directly helps our company achieve financial and strategic goals. As the financial professionals who identify and calculate risk, underwriters are charged with increasing revenues, earnings and membership while protecting the company from loss.
**Organizational Summary/Mission**
Support Aetna's ability to achieve its financial and strategic goals through effective underwriting. Underwriting support primarily includes identifying, evaluating, and managing risk in order to maximize revenue, membership and earnings.
**Position Summary/Mission**
Manages an underwriting team performing either moderately complex or varying new business and/or renewal underwriting functions. Establishes medical underwriting policies and ensures cost effective risk management and quality customer service in support of stated mission and key performance metrics for a fully-insured National Accounts. Anticipates and recognizes matters that materially affect financial results and make sound, unbiased recommendations on these matters. Managers of Underwriting have managerial responsibilities for staff and may support Director as backup.
**Fundamental Components & Physical Requirements**
Leads team to achieve department specific goals through articulation and application of business strategy, initiatives, and underwriting policy. Manages workflow within unit and directs changing priorities. Ensures that timely actions and deliverables are met, and team members have the information to do their jobs. Escalates underwriting exceptions and financial variances to senior management balancing membership, revenue growth and profitability targets. Engages in underwriting decisions with significant benefit implications. Articulates company services, product standards, underwriting policies and new initiatives to sales, customers, brokers & consultants. Leads process improvement initiatives to improve productivity, accuracy, and/or customer service and influences tool development. Takes accountability for driving solutions to completion. Responsible for manager activities related to staffing, talent management, training and development. Takes accountability for the team to ensures customer specific documents, deliverables and account related information produced by the team are accurate and support the customers quote/renewal strategy. Also ensures accurate reporting of financials is maintained for the team. Oversees training of underwriting staff and internal customers and external constituents. Provides opportunities to develop skills and experiences. Uses knowledge of competition and competitive landscape to evaluate and minimize risk while maximizing profitability. Negotiates and explains rate development and application of underwriting policy. Assists team members in handling difficult sales/renewal situations.
**Background Experience**
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
Some travel may be required.
Demonstrated success in communicating effectively with internal and external constituents.
5+ years financial underwriting experience with extensive insurance industry knowledge. Solid knowledge of other benefit program(s) (Medical, Dental, Vision, Pharmacy, Stop Loss, Medicare, Voluntary etc.) and pricing of related benefits a plus.
Experience in building strong cross-functional relationships with internal and external constituents.
Experience in anticipating customer needs and requirements as well as facilitating and negotiating using tact and diplomacy.
Demonstrated leadership that fosters and supports a strong team of individual contributors.
**Education and Certification Requirements**
Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience. Degree in Mathematics, Economics, Accounting or related field preferred.
**Pay Range**
The typical pay range for this role is:
$82,940.00 - $182,549.00
This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors. This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above. This position also includes an award target in the company’s equity award program.
