Job Overview
The SQA III Senior Test Engineer will be an integral member of the software quality organization, focused specifically on ensuring the reliability, security, and performance of payments terminals and payment application ecosystems. The role involves close collaboration with product management and engineering teams to fully understand payment product roadmaps, compliance requirements, and release priorities.
You will play a key role in enabling fast and high quality delivery by designing, developing, and maintaining automation frameworks and test scripts tailored for payments terminal testing—covering areas such as EMV transaction flows, contact/contactless card processing, PIN entry device validations, device firmware behavior, integrations with payment gateways, and regression scenarios.

Responsibilities
1. Test development and execution
• Create test strategies and detailed test plans for payments terminal and EMV adapter releases by analyzing business requirements, API/message specifications, and project timelines.
• Develop and enhance the automation framework where required to support EMV transaction automation, device lifecycle automation, and terminal regression coverage.
• Design and implement test scripts validating end to end EMV flows—contact, contactless, magstripe, PIN based transactions, offline/online authorization, reversals, and error conditions.
• Set up and validate hardware/software test environments including OPTs, EMV Level 1/2 devices, card readers, payment simulators, kernels, key injection setups, and network configurations.
• Participate in off site testing when needed (e.g., certification labs, acquiring host testing, or third party validation bodies).
• Clarify functional behaviour, EMV specifications, and payment-application requirements with product, engineering, and architecture teams; escalate issues/risks appropriately.
• Assist in creating and maintaining standard documentation, setup guides, and test procedures for EMV and terminal environments.
• Ensure structured, repeatable, and measurable testing methodologies aligned to payment industry testing practices (EMVCo test processes, scheme rules).
• Prioritize and manage testing workload to meet release timelines without compromising quality.
• Document and communicate information about upcoming releases, changes, risks, and dependencies.
• Provide technical support during system integration testing, host integration, and user acceptance testing for customers deploying payment terminals.
2. Product testing
• Execute all payments application testing activities needed for product and feature delivery.
• Manage lab setup and maintenance—OPTs, terminals, routers, simulators, EMV reference cards, and test host environments.
• Validate new features such as device UI workflows, EMV kernel updates, card scheme mandate changes, firmware updates, and contactless performance improvements.
• Test and document customer specific customizations (branding, UI flows, acceptance logic, risk parameters).
• Perform testing and compliance checks for product redesigns, EoL replacements, and hardware revisions.
• Actively contribute to product support—debugging terminal issues, replicating field defects, analyzing transaction logs, and recommending fixes or improvements.

3. Quality assurance
• Close coordination with other members of the Engineering, project and test team to ensure delivery of projects within time and quality standards
• Continually seek ways to improve and enhance the quality assurance process and the process of application development and maintenance.
• Ownership of module or micro-services for its quality.
• Make recommendations for process improvements where appropriate
• Maintain an audit trail of modification history
• Support acceptance/pilot testing
• Maintaining and improving area of specialist knowledge, undertaking training where appropriate
4. Software development
• Automate all aspects of testing of the product by completing the development of test software to test new functionality and modifications and enhancing test systems through automation.
• Proactively maintain our automation framework assets providing status reports to Test Leadership team on availability and state of the frameworks and any remediation activities under plan.
• Train and mentor test engineers on the automation frameworks and the operation of these to grow the automation capability of the test practice.
• Ensure timelines are met.
• Ensure any documentation is updated and submitted.
• Ensure customer specific application solutions are in line with the customer and company requirements
• Escalate issues in a timely manner
• Assist with technical input to project management and work with Project Manager/s and Test Team Leader to monitor project process.
• Actively use and advocate use of Invenco processes.
• Ensure solutions delivered to testing and support achieve the agreed quality standard
• Maintain and improve area of specialist knowledge by keeping up to date with advances in industry and undergoing approved training where appropriate.
5. Software documentation
• Produce appropriate test plans, work instructions, reports and release documentation.
• Verify delivered software documentation – user guides, app notes, specifications etc.
• Document resolutions of issues.
• Ensure standard issue tracking systems used
• Ensure versions can be tracked and reverted as required
6. Software testing & Release
• Validation automated and manual test plan coverage.
• Co-ordination and communication around releases, including aggregation of software packages, verification and release.
Required Skills / Qualifications / Certifications / Tech Stack (List all)
Essential
• Payments & EMV Expertise
• Strong understanding of EMV payment flows—contact, contactless, NFC, chip and PIN, magstripe, offline/online authorization, fallback flows, reversals, and terminal risk management.
• Knowledge of ISO 8583, message fields, authorization, clearing flows, and acquirer/issuer interaction.
• Familiarity with IFSF protocols, OPT payment flows, fueling systems, and forecourt device integrations.
• Understanding of EMV Level 1/2, card kernel behavior, CAPKs, AIDs, TACs, TVRs, TSI, and transaction cryptography flow.
• Testing Methodologies
• Hands on experience with functional testing, EMV device testing, regression, performance, security, certification testing, and exploratory testing specific to payment terminals.
• Experience validating terminal firmware, card reader behavior, PIN pad functions, display flows, receipts, and transaction sequencing.
• Automation & Tools
• Ability to design, develop, and execute automated test scripts for payment terminals, EMV flows, and ISO 8583 transaction validations.
• Experience with terminal automation tools, device simulators, host simulators, or custom frameworks.
• Proficiency with manual and automated testing frameworks used in terminal or payment system validation.
• API & Integration Testing
• Strong understanding of API testing for payment middleware, transaction routers, gateway services, and cloud based acquirer/integration APIs.
• Bug Tracking, Reporting & Process Tools
• Experience with JIRA, TestRail, Zephyr or equivalent tools for test case management and defect tracking.
• Ability to write clear, actionable bug reports, with logs, traces, EMV tags, and ISO message details.
• CI/CD & Version Control
• Practical knowledge of integrating EMV/terminal tests into CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience with version control systems like Git for managing test scripts, configs, and automation frameworks.
• Device & Platform Testing
• Experience testing across multiple terminal models, kernels, OS platforms, browsers (for admin portals), and hardware variants.
• Security Awareness
• Understanding of security testing concepts relating to payments—PCI, encryption keys, PIN security, DUKPT, TRSM behavior, secure boot, and firmware integrity.
• Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills
• Ability to interpret EMV transaction logs, ISO 8583 messages, card data elements, and kernel decisions.
• Strong troubleshooting skills to analyze terminal behavior, host responses, and end to end transaction failures.
• Communication & Collaboration
• Strong ability to communicate findings to engineering, product management, and compliance teams.
• Ability to mentor junior testers on EMV concepts, test planning, and terminal testing workflows.
• Comfortable working cross functionally with developers, hardware engineers, product teams, and external certification bodies.

• High attention to detail—critical for detecting subtle EMV, kernel, or message level issues.

• Payment domain. Experience in POS, EPS testing.
• Experience working with Test Rigs with payment hardware terminals
