Software Engineering Manager III, Zappos/Shopbop Catalog Engineering
Description As the Shopbop/Zappos Discovery Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of talented engineers and scientists driving innovation in search technology across our premium fashion platforms. You will work closely with Zappos and Shopbop leadership to transform how customers discover our world-class selection of products. You will oversee the development and implementation of innovative search solutions, including the integration of Large Language Models, while ensuring robust system architecture and operational excellence. You will partner daily with product managers, marketing leaders, and scientists to translate business visions into technical realities. You will leverage your technical leadership to guide your team of 8 engineers, making critical architectural decisions and ensuring the delivery of high-quality solutions. As a member of the Zappos technical leadership team, you will collaborate with industry experts in Search, ML, and E-Commerce across our sister companies at Amazon.com and Shopbop.com. You will push the boundaries of search technology, bringing the latest innovations to our customers while maintaining the high performance and reliability our platforms demand. Key job responsibilities Lead and mentor a team of 8 across multiple locations. Drive technical excellence through architecture decisions and code quality standards. Partner with Product and Marketing to transform business requirements into technical solutions. Own and execute the team's technical roadmap. Balance new feature development with operational improvements. Implement and optimize search solutions leveraging latest technologies including LLMs. A day in the life You begin with your team's daily standup, connecting engineers from both Madison and Las Vegas. You spend the morning reviewing architecture proposals for a new LLM-powered search feature. In the afternoon, you meet with Product managers to refine the roadmap for the next quarter. You conduct a 1:1 with a team member to discuss their career growth. You end the day by reviewing operational metrics and adjusting resources to address any performance concerns. About the team The Shopbop/Zappos Catalog Discovery team drives the search experience across our platforms, enabling millions of customers to find exactly what they're looking for. We use Amazon's Leadership Principles and Engineering Expertise while maintaining our unique culture. The team is distributed between Madison WI and Las Vegas NV, with this role based in Madison. Basic Qualifications - 3+ years of engineering team management experience - 7+ years of engineering experience - 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience - Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations - Experience partnering with product or program management teams - Bachelor's degree Preferred Qualifications - Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy - Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers - Experience integrating LLMs into production systems Amazon is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
