**About the Role** As a Data Engineer on the uMetric team, you will design, build, and operate the large-scale data pipelines and distributed systems that form the foundation of Uber’s metrics ecosystem. You’ll work across batch, streaming, and storage layers to ensure high throughput, low latency, and strong reliability for mission-critical metric ingestion and computation workflows. This role offers the opportunity to influence Uber-wide data architecture, partner with teams across engineering and product, and help define the future of our metric infrastructure. **What the Candidate Will Need / Bonus Points** \-\-\-\- What the Candidate Will Do ---- 1. Build and maintain scalable, fault-tolerant data pipelines across batch and streaming environments 2. Develop and operate high-performance distributed metric storage and querying systems 3. Improve system reliability, data quality, and end-to-end latency across uMetric components 4. Partner with engineering and product teams to generalize metric workflows for company-wide usage 5. Own systems end-to-end—from design to deployment to ongoing operations 6. Contribute to the evolution of Uber’s data engineering best practices and team culture \-\-\-\- Basic Qualifications ---- 1. 4+ years of experience in Data Engineering or distributed data systems 2. Strong understanding of distributed systems, data structures, and algorithms 3. Proficiency in at least one programming language: Java, GoLang, or C++ 4. Hands-on experience building ETL pipelines, data models, and high-scale data workflows 5. Solid experience with big data tools such as Spark, Flink, Hive, or Presto 6. Ability to tune, debug, and optimize performance in large-scale systems \-\-\-\- Preferred Qualifications ---- 1. Experience operating real-time streaming systems at high throughput 2. Deep understanding of distributed storage technologies (e.g., HDFS, Pinot, MySQL, Kafka) 3. Familiarity with designing observability or metrics platforms 4. Strong product mindset with the ability to collaborate across diverse stakeholders 5.
