Software Development Manager, Amazon Linux

Amazon Linux is the flagship Linux distribution of AWS. The Amazon Linux team's business is making Amazon Linux the most secure Linux distro in the cloud. We curate and maintain all OS components, including the Linux Kernel, and ship releases to our customers on frequent basis. In this role, you will be responsible for leading a team of skilled engineers to design, develop, test, and operate the control plane service for live migration in EC2. You will work closely with product managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to drive the development of new features, resolve technical issues, and maintain a high quality service. Software Development Managers in Amazon Linux are responsible for leading a team of skilled engineers. After joining, you will quickly become a key partner to the leadership team, where you will understand its core business goals and priorities. Amazon Linux Team is part of AWS Utility Computing (UC) which provides product innovations — from foundational services such as Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), to consistently released new product innovations that continue to set AWS’s services and features apart in the industry. As a member of the UC organization, you’ll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (Iot), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS. Within AWS UC, Amazon Dedicated Cloud (ADC) roles engage with AWS customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services. Key job responsibilities 1. Lead and mentor a team of 9+ engineers, driving project execution and ensuring timely delivery of commitments 2. Collaborate with product managers, engineers, and cross-functional stakeholders to shape the product roadmap and strategically prioritize development initiatives 3. Drive the development and enhancement of Amazon Linux, with a focus on maintaining high quality, reliability, and scalability 4. Foster cross-team collaboration to resolve complex technical challenges and align the product and services with customer needs 5. Hire and developing your team. Delivering through others is your primary responsibility 6. Manage the team's performance and provide guidance and mentorship to team members 7. Basic Qualifications - Entirely comfortable with the Linux operating system - Several years’ experience of recruiting, hiring, building, retaining, and managing high performing diverse and inclusive teams of engineers - Several years’ experience of leading the definition and development of software products - Proven ability in designing and developing solutions to complex problems in a large-scale enterprise environment - Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing and certification Preferred Qualifications - Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy - Experience working with the open source community, including upstream contributions - Experience delivering products against plan in a fast-paced, multi-disciplined, distributed-responsibility and often ambiguous environment Amazon is an equal opportunities employer.
