Shipping & Receiving Clerk – Industrial Machine Shop

Location: Portsmouth, VA

Schedule: Full‑Time | On‑Site

Placement Type: Contract‑to‑Hire

Pay: $20.00–$30.00/hour (based on experience)

Built for Machine‑Shop Experience—Not Warehouse‑Only Work

This is not a standard warehouse shipping role. We’re seeking a Shipping & Receiving Clerk with hands‑on experience in an industrial machine shop or heavy manufacturing environment. You’ll work directly with machined parts, raw materials, and compliance documentation—supporting quality, production, and logistics in a precision‑driven operation.

If you’ve inspected materials, reviewed MTRs, handled metal stock, and supported manufacturing workflows, this role offers strong long‑term potential in a highly skilled shop.

What You’ll Do

You’ll be a key link between receiving, quality, inventory, and production.

Receive raw materials, machined parts, and equipment; verify quantities and specs against purchase ordersInspect incoming materials for damage, defects, and dimensional accuracyReview Material Test Reports (MTRs) and Certificates of Conformance (CoCs) to confirm complianceApprove or reject materials and document results using internal inspection formsTag, label, and route conforming and nonconforming materials per quality proceduresScan, organize, and maintain inspection and compliance documentation for Quality reviewEnsure proper storage, handling, and traceability of metals, components, and assetsMaintain accurate inventory records and coordinate closely with Production and Quality teamsKeep the shipping/receiving area clean, organized, and audit‑readyPick up or deliver parts, materials, or calibrated equipment to local vendors as needed(company vehicle provided upon permanent hire)Support additional shop‑floor and logistics needs based on production flowRequired Skills & ExperienceIndustrial or machine‑shop shipping & receiving experience (strongly preferred over warehouse‑only backgrounds)Forklift and pallet jack experience (certification or recent hands‑on use)Ability to read and interpret specifications, drawings, MTRs, and compliance documentationExperience with WMS or inventory systems and accurate data entryStrong attention to detail—especially with inspection and documentationWorking knowledge of metals, materials, and basic metallurgyProficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and WordAbility to lift 50+ lbs consistentlyClean driving record (required for company vehicle use post‑hire)Preferred (Big Plus)Previous experience in a machine shop, fabrication shop, or heavy industrial environmentFamiliarity with SAP or other ERP systemsExperience handling machined parts, raw metal stock, or calibrated equipmentComfort working with quality procedures and audit‑driven documentationWhy This Role Stands OutWork in a precision‑driven industrial machine shop, not a high‑volume warehouseLong‑term opportunity with contract‑to‑hire potentialCompetitive pay based on true industrial experienceExposure to quality, machining, logistics, and production operationsSupport industries such as marine, ship repair, defense, power generation, and heavy equipmentWork EnvironmentActive industrial machine shop with frequent interaction across Production, Quality, and LogisticsHands‑on role involving material handling, inspections, and shop‑floor movementJob Type & Location

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $30.00/hr.
