**Job Title: Shipfitter**
Job Description
As a Shipfitter, you will be responsible for ensuring that all work is performed safely and meets the highest quality standards. You will need to have your own basic skill-related tools and equipment if they are not provided by the workplace. Your main duties will include laying out, fabricating, and bracing metal structural parts, such as plates, bulkheads, and frames. You will work from blueprints or templates and use scribe and hand tools to lay out positions of parts on metal. You will also locate and mark reference lines, such as center, buttock, and frame lines, and position parts in the hull of the ship.
Responsibilities
+ Align parts in relation to each other using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls.
+ Mark locations of holes to be drilled and install temporary fasteners to hold parts in place for welding.
+ Install packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories and members such as doors, hatches, brackets, and clips.
+ Prepare molds and templates for fabrication of nonstandard parts.
+ Tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding.
+ Roll, bend, flange, cut, and shape plates, beams, and other heavy metal parts using shop machinery such as plate rolls, presses, bending brakes, and joggle machines.
+ Ensure work is done safely and meets quality standards.
+ Assemble items as instructed by the floor supervisor.
+ Keep work areas clean and organized, and take proper care of all equipment and facilities.
+ Follow all company rules and policies.
+ Provide a great level of attention to detail and focus on the given task.
+ Work with team members to maximize productivity and efficiency.
+ Prepare products for shipment.
+ Report any unsafe work conditions or practices to the supervisor.
+ Lift raw materials, final products, and items packed for shipment manually (up to 60 pounds) or using a hoist.
Essential Skills
+ Experience in shipfitting, tack welding, blueprint reading, and using torches.
+ Proficiency in burning, grinding, arc gouging, and shipbuilding techniques.
+ Experience with steel, aluminum, and/or stainless steel is required.
+ Ability to identify and measure materials accurately.
+ Ability to follow instructions given both verbally and in written form.
+ Willingness to learn and work to the best of abilities with a dependable work ethic.
+ Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs and uses.
+ Ability to read blueprints, drawings, calipers, tape measures, and angle gauges.
+ Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, quality manuals, and procedure manuals.
+ Familiarity with the metric system.
+ Ability to perform simple shop math, convert decimals to fractional equivalents, and fractions to decimal equivalents.
+ Ability to stand continuously for long periods of time.
+ Willingness to work 40+ hours a week.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ Experience in preparing molds and templates for nonstandard parts.
+ Knowledge in using shop machinery such as plate rolls, presses, bending brakes, and joggle machines.

Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Newport News, Virginia.
**Pay and Benefits**
The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $30.00/hr.
