Job Title: Phlebotomist

Job Description

The primary role of a Phlebotomist is to support the healthcare team in performing various duties such as troubleshooting, training, and recommending workflow improvements. The position involves interacting with patients and ensuring efficient specimen collection and processing in a hospital setting.

Responsibilities

Perform blood draws, label specimens, and centrifuge specimens as required.Record maintenance data and carry out decontamination processes.Update patient information as necessary.Collect and store specimens following established procedures.Explain the venipuncture process clearly and courteously to patients.Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.Understand and execute physicians' orders accurately.Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens according to test orders.Verify test requisitions or computer labels against scripts for accuracy.Package specimens for transport and store them at the required temperature.Ensure compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations.Attend annual department trainings.Answer telephone inquiries and read laboratory results as needed.

Essential Skills

At least 1+ years of phlebotomy experience in a hospital setting.Proficiency in blood draw techniques and specimen collection and processing.Strong customer service skills.Ability to work off shift.Knowledge in chemistry, hematology, microbiology, coagulation, and urinalysis.Familiarity with ASCP and AMT certifications.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

Experience with both pediatric and geriatric patients.Hospital experience is mandatory.Preference for candidates skilled in heel sticks, though not required.

Work Environment

This position is based in a busy hospital setting, requiring 25 to 30 blood draws daily depending on hospital occupancy. The role involves significant walking and standing, including moving with a 20lb cart of phlebotomy supplies to patient rooms. The work is conducted in a team environment, with training provided on-site for approximately two weeks.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $17.75 - $22.00/hr.
