Wells Fargo is seeking a Senior Underwriter in Consumer Lending on the Retail Services team.
In this role, you will:
Be responsible for reviewing, analyzing, approving, and underwriting routine individual consumer requests and products with few deviations and within company and industry guidelines
Review credit applications, credit bureau information, collateral valuation, tax returns, financial statements, and or other supporting documentation to recommend or approve requests within deaccessioning authority levels by way of automated scoring system or traditional underwriting.
Assist with the calculations and preparation of reports for review.
Respond to customer inquiries and credit decisions.
Ensure credit files are current, complete, and compliant with company standards
Contact customers and partners to gather information to make appropriate decisions, and explain rationale behind credit decisions
Present recommendations for resolving situations and exercise some independent judgment while developing understanding of the Underwriting role
Collaborate with individuals and managers to handle inquiries and achieve objectives
Mentor peers and less experienced staff.
Policy application & exceptions: Interpret credit policy, document rationale, and escalate/approve exceptions appropriately under delegated authority.
Risk, control, and culture: Have consistent adherence to company risk standards and behaviors (candor, doing what’s right, execution excellence, inclusive teamwork) and contribution to a strong control environment.
Credit documentation excellence: Produce clear, defendable credit narratives that articulate risk factors, compensating factors, line/terms rationale, and accurate adverse‑action reasoning; strong audit trail discipline.
Required Qualifications:
4+ years of Underwriting experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
Desired Qualifications:
4+ years of experience in underwriting, loan processing, originations, and closing.
Strong understanding of credit principles and lending practices.
Proficiency in reviewing financial documents and assessing creditworthiness.
Extensive experience in consumer finance.
Underwriting experience of unsecured loans/product.
Experience with policy application and exceptions.
Experience with risk and control.
Experience with credit documentation excellence.
Experience in Consumer lending/Retail Services.
Lending and underwriting experience related to financial regulations experience.
Regulatory reporting and understanding the Know Your Customer and the Customer Identification Program.
Experience in developing reporting and building reports thru many resources of data.
Experience navigating through ambiguity.
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to effectively listen and elicit information.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment and across all organizational levels, where flexibility, collaboration, and adaptability are important.
Ability to work effectively, as well as independently, in a team environment.
Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include weekends and holidays based on business needs.
Demonstrated call center experience, with the ability to process applications while managing incoming calls in a fast‑paced environment.
Experience leading training sessions and supporting learner development.
