Senior Tax Manager
Job Description The Senior Director of Tax serves as the Company’s lead tax expert and advisor overseeing income tax, sales and use tax and escheatment functions including emerging issues, research, compliance and audits. As a private equity portfolio company, the Senior Director of Tax will need to manage the tax function and the necessary internal processes/controls, assist with Company initiatives, and implement the Company’s tax strategies. He or she will maintain GAAP accounting / SOX compliance and is responsible for the proper financial statement presentation. The Senior Director of Tax will need to work closely with internal business partners, owners and must work effectively with external tax partners. The position requires excellent technical skills in both tax and accounting. The candidate must be able to communicate technical tax concepts to senior management and possess strong organizational skills to properly lead the tax function. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: • Oversee income tax compliance, including but not limited to preparing estimate calculations, data gathering and analysis, reviewing federal and state partnership income tax calculations, Schedule K-1s, Schedule K-3s and returns, calculation of tax distributions to the owners and initiating/mailing estimate and extension payments. • Prepare/model the financial effects of the LLCA waterfall to the partners. • Preparation of certain gross receipts calculations and filings. • Oversee sales tax compliance, including but not limited to reviewing and approving monthly sales tax returns and payments, SKU classification review, assisting with audits, and customer sales tax inquiries. • Data gathering, reconciling, analysis and reporting of unclaimed/escheatment property. • Key contact for the tax impact of the Company’s operational initiatives (e.g., new point of sale, marketplace sales, etc.). • Gather and review tax documentation for routine bank audits. • Preparing and oversight over the department’s budget. • Manage the department’s costs, including negotiating external service provider’s fees, coding/approving invoices and department cost accruals. • Mentoring the sales tax manager and income tax manager. • Establish and maintain processes and ensure compliance is timely, accurate and adequately documented for audits. • Partner with internal accounting team to assist with separate company financials, recording and reconciling cash tax distributions, composite and withholding tax payments. • Partner with internal treasury/finance department to ensure tax payments are incorporated within the Company’s cash forecast. • Partner with internal legal department regarding any legal documentation that is needed by the tax function. • Manage relationships with external tax and service advisors. Skills and Requirements • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; MST/CPA preferred • 10+ years in a large company and/or national public accounting firm, some retail industry preferred • Robust technical knowledge of partnership/LLC income tax compliance required. • Robust technical knowledge of federal and multi-state income tax law required. • Experience in sales & use tax and escheatment working with multiple state, city and county tax authorities • Willingness to roll up sleeves and be hands on in a small and agile tax department. • Proven leadership skills underpinned by strong analytical, written and verbal communication skills
