Senior Software Engineer, Unified Platform Experience
Uber
**About the team**
The Platform Engineering organization at Uber ensures seamless operation of all Uber products, powering thousands of microservices that run business-critical functions like trips and food orders. These services rely on datastores, configurations, ML models, real-time and streaming data, and network routing, all running across millions of containers, on hundreds of thousands of hosts - both on-prem and in the cloud. The Unified Platform Experience team at Uber organizes and exposes platform resources and tools via our internal cloud platform, driving developer velocity and productivity with a frictionless, integrated development experience for Uber engineers.
We are on a mission to accelerate Uber’s product velocity by building the **Unified Platform Experience (UPE)** \- a frictionless, integrated plane for platform infrastructure. We envision transforming a complex landscape of 321,000+ distributed assets into a single, cohesive developer journey, replacing tribal knowledge with a declarative, K8s-native management plane that makes global-scale infrastructure invisible, secure, and self-healing.
**What You'll Do**
As a Senior Engineer on the team, you will be at the forefront of this transformation, building the systems that will define the future of Uber's platform engineering developer experience.
- **Architect the "Infrastructure Operating System"**: You will be an architect of the "Operating System" for Uber’s massive infrastructure. You will design and implement a highly scalable, sharded Kubernetes-based management plane that serves as the centralized control plane for over 321,000 assets. You won’t just be building tools; you will be defining the Unified Infrastructure Model (UIM), a declarative API framework that standardizes how 70+ resource types—from Kafka topics to GCP accounts—are provisioned, managed, and governed across the company.
- **Solve the NxM Integration Challenge:** You will play a pivotal role in solving the "NxM Integration" bottleneck by building platform primitives that allow infrastructure teams to onboard seamlessly. Your work will ensure that critical concerns like RBAC, audit logging, quota management, and safe deployment are provided as transparent, out-of-the-box capabilities. You will spend your time engineering sophisticated Kubernetes Operators and backend services that move our entire ecosystem away from imperative, manual workflows toward a strictly goal-state-driven, idempotent architecture.
- **Drive Frictionless Developer Experience:** Collaboration is at the heart of this role, as you will partner with senior stakeholders across Storage, Compute, and Security to integrate their specialized technologies into a single, cohesive developer journey. You will be responsible for the backend logic that powers the Unified Issue System (UIS), turning complex compliance and reliability data into "One-Click Fixes." By building the intelligence layer that surfaces these insights, you will directly reduce the "tribal knowledge" burden for thousands of engineers, making infrastructure management a frictionless experience.
- **Lead Technical Excellence and Innovation:** You will set the standard for code quality, system design, and operational excellence within the management plane. You will mentor mid-level engineers and drive the technical roadmap for our 2026 vision, including the integration of AI-powered chat assist and real-time data provisioning. Your mission is to ensure that the UPE Control Plane remains robust and resilient, maintaining a small blast radius through advanced sharding techniques while providing the foundation for the next generation of developer velocity at Uber
