The Senior Software Development Engineer - SRE, Retail & Pharmacy is pivotal in ensuring the reliability, scalability, and performance of distributed store technologies that power thousands of locations nationwide — including pharmacy platforms, Point of Sale (POS) systems, handheld devices, store servers, dispensing locations, and connectivity infrastructure. You will drive improvements in observability, monitoring, and DevOps practices to enhance system resilience and accelerate lead time for core development initiatives.
What You Will Do:
Observability & Monitoring
Architect and implement observability solutions using tools such as Splunk, Dynatrace, Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, etc. to ensure visibility into retail and pharmacy systemsDevelop proactive alerting and dashboarding strategies to detect and resolve issues before they impact customers and store operationsDefine and manage Service Level Objectives (SLOs), Service Level Agreements (SLAs), and error budgets for critical store applicationsLead critical incident recovery and postmortem processes to drive continuous improvementPerformance & Reliability Engineering
Identify and eliminate bottlenecks in development and deployment workflows to improve lead time and reduce change failure ratesConduct performance testing and reliability audits to ensure system robustnessPartner with development teams to embed Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles into the software development lifecycleBuild SRE NFR (Non-Functional Requirement) reviews for codes shipping to productionSupport and optimize applications deployed across CVS retail and pharmacy locationsCollaborate with infrastructure and store operations teams to ensure high availability and performance of store systemsMicroservices & Deployments
Champion containerization and orchestration using OpenShift and Kubernetes in hybrid cloud environmentsLeverage CI/CD pipelines to enable automated deployments at scaleUnderstanding of microservices architectureMinimum Qualifications:
5+ years of experience in SRE, DevOps, or related technology roles3+ years of experience in delivering software in a large-scale environment with reliability and resilience concepts (multi-region, multi-cloud, containerization, etc.)2+ years of experience with programming languages/frameworks2+ years of experience on Cloud Technologies (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud), Microservices concepts, and capabilities like Rancher, Docker, Kubernetes, and web API’s2+ years of experience with source control and continuous integration tools like GitHub, BitBucket, or JenkinsExperience with observability and monitoring tools such as Splunk, Dynatrace, Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, etc.Experience using customer feedback tools such as Quantum Metrics, Medalia, and Adobe AnalyticsProficiency in scripting and automation frameworksUnderstanding of microservices architecture and cloud-native technologiesExperience in Incident Management, Change Management, Infrastructure Support, and Problem Management concepts and processesExcellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to engage technical and non-technical stakeholdersPreferred Qualifications:
Experience with retail SRE organizations, including experience with store systems; Point of Sale (POS), hand-held devices, etc.Experience supporting retail or pharmacy systems at scaleExpertise in cloud development and deployment technologies, including containerization and multi-cloud configurationsExpertise in configuring, supporting, and managing Rancher, Kubernetes, and/or DockerDemonstrated understanding of various API management and related platforms like Apigee, Vordel, Data power

The typical pay range for this role is:
$92,700.00 - $222,480.00This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors. This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above.
