Position Summary
The Senior Smart Buildings & OT Consultant is responsible for leading the planning, design, coordination, and implementation of advanced smart building technologies, operational technology (OT) systems, and integrated building automation solutions. This role focuses on delivering high‑performance, data‑driven, interoperable building environments that enhance operational efficiency, user experience, maintainability, and long‑term value.
The consultant will oversee multidisciplinary project teams, lead project execution, support integrated design efforts, and ensure that smart building and OT solutions are aligned with project requirements, industry standards, and client outcomes. This is not a practice‑leader or national leadership role; instead, it is a senior technical and project delivery position.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
1. Project Leadership & Delivery
Lead cross‑disciplinary project teams delivering Smart Building and OT design scope from concept through closeout. Manage project schedules, budgets, deliverables, and progress tracking across all Smart Building and OT-related workstreams. Facilitate coordination between architecture, MEP, low‑voltage, IT, facility operations, and technology vendors. Ensure technical deliverables meet the project’s performance goals, quality standards, and client expectations.2. Smart Building Systems Design & Integration
Lead the design and integration of Smart Building systems, including building automation (BMS/BAS), IoT sensors, digital infrastructure, advanced metering, analytics enablement, and space‑use technologies. Develop Division 25 specifications, integration architecture, and system interoperability requirements. Define data governance, metadata/tagging standards, and requirements for data normalization across building systems. Coordinate system interfaces and data exchange between BAS, lighting controls, metering, access control, AV, and building operations platforms.3. Operational Technology (OT) Systems (Non‑Cyber)
Provide expertise in OT systems design, integration, and performance requirements, including: building automation OT networks, mechanical/electrical controls, plant equipment controls, advanced metering, energy dashboards and OT telemetry, shop/plant/utility‑scale OT infrastructure. Oversee OT system architecture documentation, controller layouts, system sequences, I/O summaries, and integration requirements. Align OT system selection and implementation with project goals for maintainability, interoperability, and long‑term scalability.4. Technical Leadership & Subject Matter Expertise
Serve as a senior subject matter expert for Smart Building technologies, integrated building automation, OT infrastructure, and advanced building performance methodologies. Lead the development of smart system strategies, performance requirements, and outcome‑based design criteria. Identify and evaluate emerging technologies relevant to smart buildings and operational technology systems. Provide guidance on industry standards including ASHRAE, Division 25, BACnet/IP, and smart building integration best practices.5. Stakeholder Engagement & Facilitation
Lead workshops, technical coordination meetings, and stakeholder alignment sessions to define operational use cases and building performance requirements. Communicate complex technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders, ensuring clarity and alignment. Act as the primary technical point-of-contact for Smart Building and OT project scopes.6. Quality Assurance & Performance Validation
Oversee QA/QC of smart building and OT design documentation. Support commissioning teams by developing integration test plans, verifying system functionality, and validating performance outcomes. Ensure systems are configured to meet project goals for efficiency, user experience, resilience, and life‑cycle performance.
7. Supervisory Responsibilities
Provide mentorship, guidance, and technical direction to junior and mid‑level staff. Support resource planning, task assignments, and skill development within project teams. Ability to grow the Smart Buildings practice group.
