Senior Project Engineer
Position Overview

A leading manufacturer of high-precision injection molded parts near Manhattan, NY is seeking a Senior Project Engineer to drive new product development. This role combines engineering design with hands-on production support, ensuring tooling and fixtures are optimized for manufacturability, quality, and performance.

Mission of the Role

The Senior Project Engineer will lead new product development design, creating and maintaining accurate 3D models and prints for injection molding tools and fixtures. The position bridges engineering and production, supporting smooth product launches, maintaining throughput, reducing scrap, and improving efficiency.

Tooling & Process Savvy – Deep understanding of injection mold design, tool steels, machining processes, and fixture development.

Detail-Oriented Executor – Produces accurate models, clear drawings, and complete documentation packages with tight version control.

CAD-Centric Designer – Proficient in 3D modeling, assemblies, and DFM-ready drawings.

Team Leader and Floor-Focused Problem Solver – Supports production teams directly, solving challenges in real time.

Lean-Minded – Applies lean principles to reduce waste and increase value in product and process workflows.

Technically Analytical – Uses structured root-cause methods to solve problems with data-driven solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Development

Design fixtures, tooling components, and injection molds using CAD software.

Review and revise customer-supplied drawings with DFM feedback.

Create and maintain engineering drawings and BOMs with version control.

Cross-Functional Engineering Support

Collaborate with molding, quality, and operations teams to ensure fixtures and tools perform as intended in production.

Participate in design reviews, validations, and new product kickoff meetings.

Provide support during tooling trials and process validations.

Documentation & Standards

Generate technical reports, inspection checklists, and validation records.

Ensure compliance with internal documentation and control standards.

Key Metrics & KPIs

First-pass quality rate of new tools and fixtures

On-time delivery of designs

Accuracy and completeness of engineering documentation

Responsiveness to production floor issues

Customer satisfaction with new product launches

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field

5+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment (injection molding, MIM, CNC, or high-mix production preferred)

Proficiency with CAD software for fixture and tooling design

Strong technical writing and documentation skills

Hands-on experience in fast-paced production environments

Preferred Qualifications

GD&T expertise in design and inspection

Experience selecting tool steels for molds and fixtures

Familiarity with mold flow simulation software

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand or walk in a manufacturing environment for extended periods

Occasional lifting of parts, tools, or fixtures up to 35 lbs

Comfortable working in production areas with PPE

Work Environment

Combination of office/CAD workstation and hands-on production floor activity. Exposure to typical manufacturing conditions such as machinery noise, odors, and temperature variability. Strict adherence to safety protocols and PPE requirements.
