Senior Engineering Manager - Payments
**About the Role** Uber's Commerce Platform Engineering group is vital for maintaining and enhancing the infrastructure that enables all Uber lines of business to conduct transactions. As a central and mission-critical system, all commerce in and out of Uber flows through these systems, demanding strict 4 9's availability. This is one of our largest scalable systems, and its complex day-to-day interactions require careful coordination from engineers with a deep sense of quality, security, and ingenuity. The Commerce Platform team provides a reliable, self-service platform for accessing commerce data and capabilities across Uber. It serves as a single point of integration between various Uber businesses and commerce systems, acting as the single source of truth for all transactions performed by any Uber business, including Uber Rides and Uber Eats. As a critical central platform, we bridge the gap between infrastructure and product, solving deep technical challenges at scale within problem domains specific to Uber’s business. As a Sr Engineering Manager on the Money Platform, you'll be responsible for leading a geographically distributed team of Engineers and Engineering Managers to deliver business-critical projects that other Uber teams will rely on. This role requires extensive collaboration with other Uber teams to anticipate and provide the platform features necessary to launch new and innovative products. **What the Candidate Will Need / Bonus Points** \-\-\-\- What the Candidate Will Do ---- 1. Manage a geographically distributed team of 20-25 with a mix of engineering managers and engineers with varying levels of seniority. 2. Mentors and coaches both direct reports and skip levels to foster a culture of taking risks and allowing teams to learn from failures. 3. Create a compelling vision for the team that aligns with company goals, and deliver on that promise by conceptualising projects through to high-quality completion. Coach managers on crafting a vision for their team(s). 4. Engage in extensive and constant collaboration with partner teams across US, Amsterdam, Brazil and India locations. 5. Develop a deep technical understanding of the platform and be able to represent the team in technical discussions without direct engineer involvement. 6. Mentors and coaches both direct reports and skip levels to foster a culture of taking risks and allowing teams to learn from failures. 7. Establish a culture that balances speed of execution with thoughtful management of technical debt. \-\-\-\- Basic Qualifications ---- 1. 6+ years of experience managing engineering managers and a team of engineers. 2. 12+ years of software engineering industry experience. 3. Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field. 4. Proven track record of delivering complex, cross-team projects with company-wide impact. 5. Hands-on understanding of systems and architecture, with deep technical expertise in your domain/system. 6. Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to represent the team across the company through crisp communication and effective stakeholder management. 7. Ability to unblocks dependencies across their direct teams and the larger organization. \-\-\-\- Preferred Qualifications ---- 1. Platforms and Distributed Systems 2. Strong experience building large-scale platforms for high-throughput use cases with strong consistency requirements. 3. Strong domain expertise in financial systems, including payment processing, gateways, fraud detection, risk and compliance, and end-to-end transaction lifecycle management. For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$267,000 per year - USD$297,000 per year. You will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
