Senior Director of Design Engineering

The Senior Director of Design Engineering will provide subject matter expertise across Supply Chain engineering Functions to help transform the GPC supply chain to a competitive advantage for the company.  This person will lead the team Design Engineers, reporting to the head of NAPA Engineering.  The person in this role will apply deep engineering expertise to 1) design multiple-node distribution centers of the future, and 2) identify and implement capacity improvements in the existing network to support GPC supply chain growth.   The role will be responsible to develop and implement DC design solutions across the enterprise to ensure GPC supply chain continuous improvement over time.  This leader will lead design of physical systems in new buildings and existing building retrofits.  This role will lead direct reports in Design Engineering and drafting/visualization.   Seamless peer alignment with process design and virtual design teams will be critical to the success of the role

Responsibilities

Design, develop and implement innovative warehouse automation system solutions including storage systems, material handling equipment and automation. 

Ownership of IFC (Issue for Construction) documentation and partnering in change management

Assessment of current DC Operations to identify optimization opportunities to improve flow, throughput, capacity, productivity, and OEE

Modeling, financial analysis, project justifications

PRO/CON benefit analysis for systems, automation, and labor models

Technical RFP development, bid analysis, and Engineering award recommendations

Vendor/supplier strategy development to protect project scope, budget and timelines

Establishing and document engineered standards for supply chain facilities

Design of new logistics nodes and distribution centers encompassing site planning, processes and flows.

Project activation support including technical oversight, interference resolution, and design documentation to support change management.

Review and selection of new Automation partners and technologies along with integration partners

Technical specification for all systems, automation and storage systems including facility PIT

Flow analysis

Bottleneck analysis

Cycle time analysis

Inventory slotting

CAD drawing generation, vendor red-line reviews, and composite drawing consolidations

Supervision of L4-L6 Design engineers

Identification and tracking of DC capacities in throughput and cubic storage by process & product line

Engineering ownership of analytics and problem solving on key technical solutions

Qualifications

Bachelors degree in Industrial or Mechanical Engineering

10 years of supply chain engineering experience (Distribution, Fulfillment or Manufacturing)

Experience in developing productivity rates, labor savings analysis, engineering standards, and process improvement

Experience in Distribution or Fulfillment facility design

Experience in evaluating and implementing Automation solutions

Strong analytical skills with proficiency in Engineering economics, simulation modeling, and advanced data and analytics

Experience leading small to medium size Engineering and project execution teams

Strong analytical skills and proficiency with statistical analysis

Experience in Value Stream Mapping

Experience working in a performance excellence organization (Lean, Six Sigma, etc.)

Physical Demands / Working Environment

Work performed in warehouse and construction environments.

Based out of Atlanta, GA with a high percentage of travel required (80%) for project activation and launching new buildings.
