Job Summary

Responsible for owning, evolving, and scaling the White Cap design system to ensure a consistent, accessible, and high‑quality user experience across our eCommerce platform and future digital products.  Defines and advances a long‑term, scalable design system strategy, expands adoption beyond WhiteCap.com, and drives the creation of a centralized design system portal that serves as the single source of truth for components, patterns, and guidelines.   Focuses on building and maintaining system components, tooling, and documentation, while partnering closely with engineering to ensure design intent is accurately realized in production.

Major Tasks, Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities

Owns and evolves the White Cap design system by maintaining a unified source of truth, scaling the Figma library, delivering prioritized system updates, applying Atomic Design principles, and developing a strategy to expand and democratize the system through a centralized design system portal.

Defines and executes a design system strategy that expands adoption beyond WhiteCap.com  by leading the development of a centralized design system portal, enabling scalable contribution and governance, aligning with engineering and product on standards and implementation, and continuously improving components and documentation based on system usage and gaps to support long‑term consistency across products.

Partners with product designers to translate requirements into reusable system components, tests those components across states and breakpoints for predictable scalability, and ensures they meet accessibility standards and inclusive design best practices.

Writes clear, actionable user stories and acceptance criteria to support accurate engineering implementation, collaborates with developers on component feasibility and system alignment, and conducts design QA to ensure shipped components match design specifications and intended behavior.

Creates and maintains comprehensive documentation for designers and developers, provides guidance on effective component usage and appropriate use cases, and tracks system changes to ensure alignment as the design system evolves across teams.

Nature and Scope

Identifies key barriers/core problems and applies problem solving skills in order to deal creatively with complex situations. Troubleshoots and resolves complex problems. Makes decisions under conditions of uncertainty, sometimes with incomplete information, that produce effective end results.

Independently performs assignments with instruction limited to the expected results. Determines and develops an approach to solutions. Receives technical guidance only on unusual or complex problems or issues.

May oversee the completion of projects and assignments, including planning, assigning, monitoring and reviewing progress and accuracy of work, evaluating results, etc. Contributes to employees' professional development but does not have hiring or firing authority.

Work Environment

Located in a comfortable indoor area. Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable.

Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position and there is frequent opportunity to move about. On rare occasions there may be a need to move or lift light articles.

Typically requires overnight travel less than 10% of the time.

Education and Experience

Typically requires BS/BA in a related discipline. Generally 5-8 years of experience in a related field OR MS/MA and generally 3-5 years of experience in a related field. Certification is required in some areas.

Preferred Qualifications

6+ years of professional product or digital design experience, including 3+ years owning and evolving a design system in Figma across multiple teams or products.

Experience working in an agile environment and collaborating with cross‑functional teams.

Strong understanding of Atomic Design principles and how to apply them effectively.

Advanced proficiency in Figma, including components, variables, and versioning.

Solid understanding of accessibility best practices and their application within design systems.

Excellent communication and collaboration skills for partnering with designers, developers, and product teams.

Familiarity with component libraries such as Shadcn or similar (good to have).
