In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of Island Health (Vancouver Island Health Authority), patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

This position represents a regular full time training opportunity (theory and practicum) to prepare staff to work in the specified Island Health specialty department. Upon completion of the training the staff member will be placed into a regular full time rotation line in the specialty department that they have been trained for.

Please note: There is an 18 month return of service requirement as a regular/permanent employee within the Island Health specialty department for which they have been trained. Note: staff may move between Island Health departments within that specialty. The post-basic training program requires full time attendance. Reports to the Nurse Manager, Department Head, or designate. Plans and provides direct nursing care to patients/residents in the hospital or in the community in accordance with the unit/program philosophy, competency guidelines, policies, and the BC College of Nurses and Midwives Standards for Nursing Practice in British Columbia.

QUALIFICATIONS:Education, Training And Experience

Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing LPN registrant, with two years' recent related medical and/or surgical experience. When applicants have completed this specialty training they will be moved into a regular position within the Specialty department.

Skills And Abilities Demonstrated knowledge and competencies of full scope of Practice currently required by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives. Tolerance for a climate of constant change, fast-paced activities, and diverse responsibilities. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with all members of the interdisciplinary team throughout all aspects of patient care. Demonstrated ability for good observation and patient/client assessment skills and recognizing the need to seek assistance when required. Strong interprofessional skills. Ability to collaborate with others effectively. Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position including standing for long periods of time, pushing/pulling equipment and lifting equipment up to 25 lbs. Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work for self and others while also responding to and prioritizing the requests/needs of the surgical team. Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment including computer and a variety of windows based software and surgical equipment/supplies. Ability to think critically and problem solve. Provide culturally sensitive care and services. Ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of interdisciplinary teams.
