Summary These positions are located in Acadia National Park in the Maintenance Division. The typical seasonal period is May to November, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: May 2026 Responsibilities This is an open continuous vacancy announcement. Applicants will be referred periodically throughout the announcement period. Replaces solenoids, relays, control modules, water pumps, fuel injectors, spark plugs, brake pads/shoes, wheel bearings/hubs, ball joints, control arms, steering linkages, exhaust components, cooling system components, engine components, belts, hoses, tires, and complete assemblies such as engines, transmissions, transfer cased, transaxles and rearends. Services and checks air conditioning systems, including purging and recharging systems, flushing radiators and replacing anti-freeze solutions, and aligning cars and trucks by adjusting caster, camber and toe. May assist with, or prepare monthly reports, requisitions for supplies and parts, job reports and vehicle labor and parts forms. Responsible for neatness and organization of work area and assigned tools; parts control and inventory, immediate cleanup of any spills or other concerns that may present a hazard to shop personnel or others. NOTE: OPM has identified this position as eligible for an exception to the typical 1039 hours limit. This exception allows up to 1560 hours which may extend the season dates noted in the Summary above. In support of Executive Order (EO) 14189 "Celebrating America's 205th Birthday" and EO 14314 "Making America Beautiful Again by Improving our National Parks" the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has approved an exception to the 1039 hour time limitation for this position. This approval extends the time limitation up to 1560 hours for this temporary seasonal appointment. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT): Experience performing vehicle and equipment operation checks to determine safety deficiencies or service requirements of vehicles and equipment; performing maintenance on automobiles, trucks, and tractors including adjusting brakes, replacing spark plugs, cleaning or replacing filters, and rotating tires; repairing gasoline and diesel engines including replacing solenoids, water pumps, mufflers, radiator caps, and a variety of belts and hoses; inspecting, repairing, and overhauling small engines and other components on items such as lawn mowers, weed eaters, pumps, ATV's and other related equipment under normal supervision, subject to inspection. Additional Information Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS). If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility. The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The incumbent frequently lifts, handles, and carries parts and equipment weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds), and occasionally moves moderately heavy items weighing up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds) with assistance or with mechanical devices. This is a match to the physical effort described at the grade 8 level in the job grading standard. At that grade level the incumbent makes repairs which often require them to work in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions, and they frequently stand for long periods of time, bend, stoop, crawl under vehicles, and make repairs in tight spaces. They frequently lift, handle, and carry parts and equipment weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds), and occasionally they move moderately heavy items with assistance including objects weighing up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds). To reduce the dangers and irritations the incumbent follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as safety shoes and glasses, and respirators.
