Key job responsibilities
- Design and develop innovative features for Kindle's supplemental content ecosystem across iOS, Android, and eReader devices
- Build and enhance generative ML systems to create responsive reading experiences.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to conceive, design, and implement new ways for readers to interact with their books
- Create scalable, high-performance solutions for search, content indexing, and real-time information systems to bring more context to the reading experience
- Work in an agile environment to continuously improve the reading experience for millions of customers globally
A day in the life
As a Software Development Engineer on our team, you'll tackle challenging problems that enhance how readers engage with their books. You might start your day collaborating with ML engineers, then spend time designing data storage and protocols to optimize performance. You might collaborate with design on a new feature for iOS (or another platform) or build infrastructure to improve our ability to recommend a next book. You'll work closely with product managers, designers, and fellow engineers to transform innovative ideas into features that delight our customers.
The challenges you'll solve for are meaningful and diverse - from helping readers quickly find information within books to creating experiences to help them reconnect with stories. We're looking for engineers who are passionate about creating new ways to experience books, comfortable managing ambiguity, and excited to iterate quickly based on customer feedback.

We are a highly collaborative, highly supportive, agile team with the opportunity to work across the tech stack, but also the flexibility for people who want to specialize in a specialty leveraged across several products. Our team's work has up to the top of Amazon leadership, as we're working on innovative features. We value work-life balance and invest in making on-call as pain free as possible with people taking dedicated effort in sprints outside oncall to improving our tech stack and operations. Our team is cross-functional with dedicated design, test, science, and operations experts.
Basic Qualifications
- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language
Preferred Qualifications
- 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $129,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $223,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
