Safety Specialist
Responsibilities & Duties: + Provides coaching and subject matter expertise to the site’s management and employees in all matters related to H&S including all potential losses. + Performs as an integral member of the site’s management team and leads the site in the execution of H&S strategy. + Promotes Continuous Improvement Culture and Cross Functional Teams. + Assists with the oversight of the site’s H&S management system, processes and programs to ensure continuous improvement as well as regulatory and company compliance. + Continually engages employees to ensure the desired H&S behaviors are being demonstrated at all levels of the organization. + Assists with minimizing losses including, but not limited to, assists with managing workers’ compensation claims, property damage, business interruption, and unexpected costs. Job Qualifications: + Bachelor’s Degree, preferably, (but not required) in H&S related field, or equivalent experience and training, is preferred. + Professional certification such as Certified Mine Safety Specialist, or Certified Safety Professional, is a plus. + Minimum five years of progressive H&S experience, preferably in a mining, manufacturing or construction environment. + Experience with OSHA, MSHA, or other similar regulatory agencies is required. + Proficient computer skills and working with Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is a must. + Ability to manage multiple tasks and set priorities appropriately. + Fluency in spoken and written English.Fluency in Spanish is a plus. + Experience working with employees who are part of a unionized labor force. + Must be able to support a continuous improvement environment as well as change management initiatives. + Able to travel regularly to cover assigned locations. + Able to develop and conduct training programs. + Excellent organization, conflict resolution, communication and interpersonal skills. + Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, challenge status quo, and initiate change. Needed Knowledge and Skills + Knowledge of people management skills. + Knowledge of continuous manufacturing business sector. + Knowledge of Safety Regulations + Technical creditability as it relates to industry Skills + Demonstrates strong verbal and written communication skill; effectively conveys the intended message to all levels within and outside the organization and effectively listens to concerns and issues of others. + Demonstrates the ability to work across organizational boundaries and all levels of the organization to create interpersonal and team working relationships. + Displays strong leadership skills and is able to inspire others to action and therefore achieve the site’s H&S goals and objectives. + Possesses strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple initiatives and duties. + Demonstrates the ability to effectively influence others without direct authority, while maintaining positive and productive relationships with management, peers, and hourly employees. + Deals effectively with difficult situations and resolve conflicts to ensure the best solutions to problems are identified and issues are resolved in the best interest of all parties. + Demonstrates the ability to work autonomously to accomplish work without direct supervision. + Build strong interpersonal relationships and understand the site’s employees to help them realize their potential to achieve a safe working environment. + Influences others by building trust and credibility prior to promoting ideas and seeks win/win outcomes for ideas and initiatives using facts, logic, reason to establish rational arguments. + Demonstrates the ability to train and facilitate learning to ensure appropriate H&S skills, knowledge, and behaviors are instituted throughout the sites. + Possess the ability to identify events that can adversely impact a task, an initiative, or a program outcome and manage the risk appropriately.
