This is an anticipated vacancy. The posting is for the Safety Officer II in Division 9. This position is responsible for evaluating heavy truck driver applicants including processing and interpreting driver records checks. This position will manage and run the fleet safety program in the Division to include: coordination and conduct road testing and training & certification of heavy truck drivers. This position will conduct safety related training, including new employee safety orientation, fleet safety, and could include forklift operator, traffic control, flagger, first aid and other training as directed by the Safety Consultant or Division Engineer. Employee will help to maintain equipment and personal injury statistics. Position may assist in administration of Workers Compensation program. Employee will assist supervisors in conducting monthly unit safety meetings and safety audits of crews and facilities. Position will help to coordinate safety audio metric testing. Employee will generally assist the Division managers in administering the department safety program and complying with motor vehicles law and state and federal safety and health regulations. Employee will perform other safety related duties as assigned. Employee will traverse uneven and difficult terrain. Operate motor vehicle safely in all kinds of weather, including snow and ice. Knowledge of CDL (Commercial Drivers License) laws and NCDMV laws/requirements. Ability to operate computer with Windows based software and proficient in Microsoft Office suite of software (Word, Excel and Access database). Possess skills and abilities to develop and deliver safety training to large groups. Deep knowledge and understanding of proper MUTCD requirements and field application. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Safety toe shoes required. Bachelor’s degree with a major in safety management, occupational safety, industrial technology, or one of the physical sciences from an appropriately accredited institution and a minimum of two years of progressive occupational and safety and health experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
