Rural Swim Coordinator – HRM Beaches
Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the seasonal position of Rural Swim Coordinator – HRM Beaches.

The Rural Swim Coordinator is responsible for delivering high-quality swimming lessons to rural and underserved communities within the Halifax Regional Municipality. This role emphasizes a high level of self-direction, personal motivation, and independent decision-making in isolated environments. The successful candidate will ensure program excellence, maintain equipment readiness, and serve as the primary responder during emergencies, fostering a safe and inclusive aquatic experience for all participants.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Deliver swimming lessons and aquatic programs, ensuring quality instruction and participant engagement.Complete lesson plans, program worksheets, report cards, and assessments accurately and on time.Maintain a clean and safe environment, ensure equipment is in good condition, and minimize hazards.Ensure patron safety by preventing and responding to injuries, incidents, and emergencies. Comfort in acting as the primary first responder in rural or isolated locations until additional help arrives.Work independently with minimal supervision, demonstrating strong initiative and personal accountability in all aspects of program delivery.Educate participants on safety standards, policies, and procedures while promoting positive community engagement.Maintain personal fitness, certifications, and participate in mandatory in-service training and professional development.May perform other related duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:Current Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard – Pool OptionCurrent Intermediate Workplace First Aid, CPR-C & AED from a CSA-recognized organizationCurrent Lifesaving Society Airway ManagementCurrent Lifesaving Society Swim for Life Instructor or YMCA Instructor Certification (or willingness to obtain before contract start)Proven ability to work independently and maintain motivation in rural or isolated environmentsPrevious experience supporting individuals with disabilities is an assetSubmission of certification copiesNova Scotia Class 5 Driver’s LicenseTechnical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
A physical screening is part of the application process and includes:400-meter timed swim50-meter swim and carryConditions of Employment:Successful completion of training requirementsSuccessful completion/recertification of National Lifeguard – Waterfront OptionAn equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.  Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must clearly demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.

Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.

Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job-specific knowledge. Candidates who are selected for testing may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion.

WORK STATUS: Seasonal – June 1st, 2026 to August 31, 2026, depending on location and weather conditions.

HOURS OF WORK: Must be willing to work a flexible work schedule.

SALARY: Non Union; $20.75 (plus 4% vacation pay) (paid lunch and travel time)
