Risk Engineer
As a Risk Engineer at Aon, you’ll work at the intersection of engineering, finance, and risk. This is a truly diverse role: you will move between boardrooms and industrial facilities, visiting sites across Australia. No two days look the same — one day you may be surveying a mine or a manufacturing plant, and the next you may be modelling business interruption exposures for an ASX‑listed client. In this role, you will have considerable independence and be trusted to manage your own schedule. You will work directly with client partners and offer objective advice that influences major insurance and risk funding decisions. You will develop a deep understanding of how engineering risk translates into financial impact, becoming a key Advisor in supporting clients’ insurance placement strategies and internal risk management programs. Aon is in the business of better decisions At Aon, we shape decisions for the better to protect and enrich the lives of people around the world. As an organization, we are united through trust as one inclusive, diverse team, and we are passionate about helping our colleagues and clients succeed. What the day will look like You’ll work across an exceptionally broad range of industries — including energy, resources, manufacturing, health and aged care, supply and logistics, construction, property portfolios, education, government, and food and beverage. This variety means you’ll regularly visit engaging and complex sites, giving you exposure to diverse operations, technologies, and risk profiles. The role includes field‑based risk assessments, travel to client locations, analytical work, and close collaboration with our broking colleagues to align engineering insights with insurance market requirements. This role involves periodic travel to client sites. Most travel consists of day trips within your local area or region, with occasional interstate trips that may involve a single day or a few nights away. Longer trips during the week can occur on occasion, and these are typically planned in advance with appropriate notice. We are a leading provider of broking and consulting services for risk management, insurance transactions, reinsurance, human capital consulting and financial planning. Aon is a global leader in the design and provision of risk services and products. We assist clients with the design, implementation, and communication of cost‑effective asset protection programs to support their risk mitigation and risk transfer goals. As a consultant within a world‑leading insurance brokerage, you’ll work with a broad range of clients — from small businesses to ASX‑listed companies to large multinationals. Responsibilities include: Conducting on‑site risk assessments at client facilities across Australia Collaborating closely with client engineering teams, site leaders, insurers, and Aon brokers to align technical findings with insurance market expectations Translating engineering observations into financial loss estimates to support property damage and business interruption (ISR) placement Acting as a trusted adviser to clients, helping them prioritise risk improvements and justify capital investments in risk controls Performing Property Risk Assessments against local legislation and industry protocols Assessing predominant Construction, Occupancy, Protection and Exposure (COPE) elements of an operation Reviewing client operations against relevant standards (e.g., NCC/BCA, Australian Standards, FM Global, NFPA etc.) Developing complex loss scenarios based on-site conditions and calculating Maximum Foreseeable Loss, Probable Maximum Loss, and Normal Loss Expectancy Providing clients with practical and economical risk recommendations to improve site and enterprise risk profiles Partnering with Aon broking colleagues to develop and present insurance market submissions to secure the best achievable terms and conditions Tailoring service offerings to suit the risk management needs and budgets of existing and prospective clients Coordinating the delivery of Risk Control and Engineering Services for major clients Managing your own portfolio of clients with significant autonomy and responsibility for deliverables and stakeholder communication How this opportunity is different We embrace a hybrid working culture where most colleagues work flexibly — in the office, at home and from other remote locations. We believe we can drive greater growth for our business and our colleagues by fostering a more inclusive and flexible culture, improving access to talent and enhancing colleague wellbeing. Skills and experience that will lead to success A Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Structural, Fire) or Bachelor of Science (Physics), or a related technical discipline. Candidates with insurance qualifications and several years of surveying experience are also encouraged to apply. Engineers with experience in heavy industry or similar environments — such as project engineering, project management, reliability, maintenance, commissioning, or inspection — are highly regarded. Previous risk engineering experience within the insurance industry is advantageous but not essential. Ability to work independently, manage travel, and structure your own work program to meet client and internal deadlines. Confidence engaging with stakeholders at all levels, from site personnel to executive leadership. Interest in how engineering risks translate into financial outcomes, insurance considerations, and business interruption impacts. Strong time‑management skills, including planning site visits, completing assessments, and preparing clear and timely reports. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail. Commercially minded with strong numerical and analytical capability. Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. High levels of personal motivation, professional integrity, and strong organisational skills. Ability to build and maintain strong internal and external relationships, effectively managing a broad range of stakeholders. Experience or knowledge of fire protection systems and natural catastrophe exposures (e.g., bushfire, flood, cyclone) is advantageous. Demonstrated ability to complete high‑quality risk reports efficiently — balancing technical accuracy, clarity, and commercial considerations such as timeframes, fee budgets, and client expectations.
