Michael Baker International is seeking an experienced Resident Engineer to lead high‑profile municipal and local agency construction projects across the Chicago area. As a Resident Engineer, you’ll serve as the owner’s on‑site representative, overseeing transportation and municipal construction projects from pre‑construction through close‑out—while mentoring teams and partnering closely with clients and contractors.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead Construction Delivery
Oversee day-to-day construction activities, ensuring quality, safety, and schedule compliance Serve as the primary on-site representative for the client Protect the owner’s interests by identifying and resolving defects or deficienciesCollaborate & Communicate
Act as the key liaison between clients, contractors, public agencies, and internal teams Lead construction meetings with confidence and clarity Provide regular progress updates to senior leadershipManage Contracts & Documentation
Administer construction contracts, including pay requisitions, change orders, and closeout documentation Review schedules, shop drawings, and contractor submittals Maintain accurate daily logs, meeting minutes, and project recordsMentor & Develop Teams
Guide and support inspectors, junior engineers, interns, and co‑ops Set expectations, promote best practices, and foster professional growthPROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Construction Engineering (construction emphasis preferred) Illinois P.E. license or ability to obtain within 6 months 10+ years of construction inspection experience, including supervisory responsibility Experience with local agency projects funded with federal construction dollars Working knowledge of IDOT projects; Illinois Tollway experience is a plus Proficiency with IDOT CMMS (required); eBuilder experience preferredCOMPENSATION
The approximate compensation range for this position is $136,000 to $210,000. This compensation range is a good-faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
