**Job Description** The Molecular Analysis Facility (MAF) is a fully staffed fee-for-use instrumentation facility for users from the UW, other universities, and industry. Capabilities include microscopy, spectroscopy, and surface science. Users can be trained to independently perform experiments, or an experienced staff member can perform experiments for the users for a fee. The MAF tools support a wide range of users including both academic and industrial. MAF tools commonly support research in fields of Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Life Sciences and multiple Engineering disciplines. The MAF is a fee-for-use facility. Much of the funding comes from users who pay a fee to use the tools and have staff assistance. Currently other funds come from state funds - the UW Provost funds and from the UW Clean Energy institute. This Research Scientist/Engineer 3 is NOT a research position. This position supports the Molecular Analysis Facility (MAF), which provides academic and industrial users access to advanced characterization tools. The Research Scientist/Engineer 3 is responsible for the demonstration, training, and sample evaluation using a variety of analytical techniques within the Molecular Analysis Facility (MAF). Primary emphasis is on the Thermo Fisher Helios 5UX DualBeam Focused Ion Beam (FIB), and/or Thermo Fisher Apreo Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Secondary emphasis on Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). **Train users on FIB/SEM and sample preparation (50%)** + Train users in applied FIB/SEM. + Manage and train other staff and users in FIB/SEM sample preparation, tool use, evaluation of results. + Support users with troubleshooting instrument issues + Consult with researchers on feasibility and best application of electron microscopy to achieve their project objectives. + Perform characterization for untrained or off-site clients. + Establish, document, and execute standard operating procedures for remote and local facility users and ensure proper and safe use of equipment and sample preparation. **Tool maintenance (20%)** + Maintain FIB and/or SEMs to minimize downtime and keep tools productive and simple to use. Responsibilities include light preventative maintenance and repairs, system documentation, and oversight of contract vendor activities. **Assist in other MAF Operations (20%)** + Cross-Train on other key MAF TOOLS to provide secondary support on other equipment in MAF (TEM and/or other MAF tools) + Assist in the MAF lab operations (help with Gas orders as necessary, purchase supplies as necessary, assist in maintaining small tools related to FIB and/or SEM sample preparation. **Other (10%)** + Extend lab capabilities through continued education and adopting new best practices. + Assist in MAF outreach activities by contributing to demos and/or tours of the MAF **Minimum Qualifications:** + Bachelors degree in Engineering or a related field and four years of experience in DualBeam FIB, SEM, and FIB/SEM sample preparation. _Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration._ **Desired Qualifications:** + Four or more years professional experience working with DualBeam FIB + Four or more years professional experience working with SEM + Four or more years experience with FIB/SEM sample preparation + Customer service: Demonstrated ability to train and interact with scientists with a wide range of backgrounds. + Ability to efficiently multi-task and complete multiple FIB and/or SEM projects in a timely manner + Ability to work collaboratively with fellow MAF staff members. + Knowledge and ability to establish, document, and execute lab standard operating procedures and ensure proper and safe use of equipment and sample preparation. + Experience working with TEM and TEM sample preparation. + Experience working in a multiuser facility. + Ability to contribute to technical and educational resources (manuals, videos, web pages), and prepare and present materials, lectures, and presentations to group and individual guests to MAF. + Working knowledge of vacuum systems + Nano-scale analysis and materials characterization experience including atomic force microscopy, XRD or other MAF tools **Compensation, Benefits and Position Details** **Pay Range Minimum:** $80,244.00 annual **Pay Range Maximum:** $107,676.00 annual **Other Compensation:** - **Benefits:** For information about benefits for this position, visit https://www.washington.edu/jobs/benefits-for-uw-staff/ **Shift:** First Shift (United States of America) **Temporary or Regular?** This is a regular position **FTE (Full-Time Equivalent):** 100.00% **Union/Bargaining Unit:** UAW Research **About the UW** Working at the University of Washington provides a unique opportunity to change lives – on our campuses, in our state and around the world.
