**Job Description** **Research Scientist/Engineer 1 Job Posting** **Who we’re looking for:** The UW Medicine - Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology in Seattle, WA has a fantastic opportunity for a **Research Scientist/Engineer 1.** The Research Scientist 1 will support research projects for understanding viral replication, viral-host protein-protein interactions, drug efficacy, viral evolution, and viral genome sequencing fields, and subsequent performance of assays. **Work schedule:** + 100% FTE + Monday – Friday + Day shift **What you’ll contribute:** + Perform viral genomics workflows including hybridization capture, PCR-based assays, and metagenomic sequencing. + Design and optimize PCR primers and probes; conduct PCR, qPCR, and digital PCR assays with troubleshooting as needed. + Prepare next-generation sequencing (NGS) libraries and analyze sequencing data using established bioinformatics pipelines. + Analyze, interpret, and validate experimental data; communicate unexpected results or deviations to senior staff. + Support development and optimization of laboratory methods in PCR, NGS, phage display, and serological profiling. + Draft and contribute to scientific manuscripts, reports, data summaries, figures, and presentations. + Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and associated software. + Maintain accurate laboratory documentation and perform literature reviews to support research activities. + Manage specimen inventories, reagents, and laboratory supplies; perform routine maintenance and cleaning. + Participate in lab meetings, provide project updates, and perform related duties as assigned. **What you’ll need:** + Bachelor’s degree in Genetics and Genomics or related field and one year of relevant experience with molecular genetics/genomics research or a closely related life-science field. + Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration. **Additional Qualifications:** + Must have experience in hybridization capture for viral genomics, primer and probe design for T. pallidum and evaluation of qPCR, metagenomics, protein production. + Experience with Next-generation sequencing, + Knowledge of DNA sequencing analysis, + Experience with the use of DNA sequence analysis programs. + Data analysis in a laboratory setting **Desired Qualifications.** + Peer-reviewed publication record. + Critical thinking skills, Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong presentation skills. **What we offer:** + Vacation time and sick time off that accrues monthly, including 12 paid holidays. + State Employee Tuition Exemption Program covering up to 6 credits of qualifying coursework per quarter at the University of Washington or other participating colleges or universities. + Fully subsidized public transit pass (U-PASS) that covers multiple forms of public transportation in the region. + Excellent healthcare, dental, disability, retirement, and other plan options. + Lots of free fantastic fitness, healthy eating, finance, and stress reduction classes offered through the Whole U. + And much more! **About the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology:** A regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for innovative patient care, research and educational programs, the **Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology** combines the sophisticated testing and informatics capabilities of fully accredited laboratories with the resources of an academic institution in its delivery of clinical and anatomic pathology services.
