Position Scope

The Research Scientist Co-op role supports the Technology Development team across a broad range of research activities that improve the current Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology and lead to the development of new DAC technologies. The Technology Development team develops solutions that reduce plant costs and enable new markets and broaden commercial opportunities. Major responsibilities of the Research Scientist Co-op role range from conducting experimental studies and analyses in the lab.

You'll be a key part of an elite, multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers working at the forefront of driving the cost of carbon capture down, which is critical for widespread adoption of DAC. Successful candidates are driven students with a keen interest in applying their knowledge in chemistry, physics, and engineering to the development of clean technologies.

This position is an 8 month or longer co-op term.  Start dates are flexible.   This position is onsite and based in Squamish, BC.The work schedule follows a M-F, 40hrs/week schedule.  Relocation support is provided. This position pays $22-26/hour. Expected start date is May 2026.

Health, Safety and Environment:

Demonstrate a positive safety culture. Identify, report and resolve unsafe conditions, processes or actions within the workplace. Ensure that all safety related incidents, accidents and near misses are reported and investigated in line with company policy. Follow all existing health and safety related standard operating procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

Primary focus will be to collect samples, conduct analysis, analyze and post results, and communicate process deviations in support of Technology Development team.Support the Technology Development team with experimental design and execution, data analysis, and communication of results.

Technical:

Perform experiments at laboratory, bench-scale, and pilot scale.Assist with experiment design, data analysis, and reporting of results.Collect process samples from the plant for analysis.Provide timely processing and analysis of test samples in accordance with the sampling schedule, including: SpectroscopyParticle Size AnalysisGravimetric determinationsICP-OESTICMicroscopyTitrationsConduct sample receiving, data entry and chemical inventory through LIMS.Perform routine maintenance and calibration on laboratory equipment by following the Laboratory Quality Control procedures and notifying lab supervisor if an out of calibration exists.Interpret the results based on the analysis, discuss deviations/off specifications results with the Technology Development Team and assist in identifying corrective actions which can include resampling.Recognize atypical results in the lab/ pilot plant and collaborate with the Technology Development Team to identify the root cause. Review and validate the results.Support plant analyzer validation studies.Maintain the laboratory in a clean, tidy, and serviceable condition including managing sample waste disposal.Ensure that best practice is identified and implemented for laboratory procedures and data analysis.Identify, capture, and communicate lessons learned and implement solutions where appropriate.Foster and maintain a positive culture within the Technology Development team; promote effective teamwork effort, a questioning mindset, and recognize failure as a learning opportunity.Complete training requirements for CE processes and gain a critical understanding of pilot plant systems, process fundamentals, and technology development.

Education

Currently enrolled in Canadian post-secondary institute (3rd, or 4th year, or Masters).Enrollment in an undergraduate or Masters co-op program in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Chemical Engineering.

Key Competencies

Understanding of mass transfer, thermodynamics, kinetics, and other chemistry principles.Ability to effectively communicate technical information.Experience performing laboratory experiments and operating lab analytical equipment.Experience evaluating novel equipment and processes is an asset.Experience following standard operating procedures is an asset.

Required Other Skills
