Job Summary

A highly motivated Research Lab Specialist Associate is sought to serve as the Lab Manager for the Antonellis Lab at the University of Michigan Medical School. The laboratory studies the molecular mechanisms of human inherited diseases caused by mutations in a large family of ubiquitously expressed and essential genes.

The selected applicant will help to design, execute and analyze results from experiments related to defined research projects.  This individual is expected to make scientific contributions, as well as interpret and analyze results. The position will focus heavily on worm and mouse model systems.

Experimental responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Design and perform PCR assays, restriction enzyme digests, and DNA sequencing analysisClone DNA and propagate in bacteriaCulture and transfect mammalian cellsPerform Northern and Western blot analysesPerform fluorescence microscopy and luciferase assays, including data analysisC. elegans and mouse husbandry and experimentationData analysis using a variety of software programs, and preparation of data for presentationTraining of new lab members and functional supervision of undergraduate students

Non-experimental responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Purchasing lab supplies and equipmentManaging lab safety programMaintenance of lab equipmentLight weekend work feeding fishCompliance with University of Michigan safety and animal care regulationsOther duties as assignedRequired Qualifications*Bachelor's degree in biology, genetics, or another related area of study2 years of undergraduate research experienceExperience working with mouse model systemExperience with PCR assaysExperience with DNA sequencing and analysisExperience with cell cultureStrong understanding of neurological diseaseKnowledge and understanding of laboratory safety protocols including biological and chemical safetyExperience analyzing research data and preparing data for presentationsAbility and motivation to learn new experimental approaches and safety protocols, and analyze and present dataExcellent teamwork and communication skillsDesired Qualifications*3 years or more of undergraduate wet lab experienceExperience with worm (C. elegans) experimentationExperience in training students and others in lab safety and on the application of new techniquesModes of Work

Background Screening
