DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM
Department Specific Functions
DRI related duties include but are not limited to:
1. Read and interpret technical data sheets for laboratory products, reagents, and materials.
2. Adhere strictly to safety guidelines when handling laboratory products and reagents.
3. Comply with EH&S and UM safety policies, including proper laboratory waste management.
4. Operate routine laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, shakers, water baths, balances, and inverted microscopes.
5. Operate advanced instrumentation, including flow cytometers, confocal microscopes, slide scanners, and other specialized imaging systems.
6. Participate in training for new techniques and instrumentation as required, with the expectation of rapidly achieving technical proficiency and progressing to independent operation in a timely manner.
7. Proactively utilize available institutional and online resources (e.g., DRI and UM) to expand technical expertise and improve laboratory practices.
8. Prepare buffers and standard laboratory reagents.
9. Independently execute routine laboratory protocols and experiments.
10. Analyze routine experimental data as appropriate.
11. Present results and discuss findings at laboratory meetings when applicable.
12. Support team members in more complex experimental procedures as needed.
13. Contribute to the development and refinement of protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
14. Ability to operate computers and software relevant for the lab activities (i.e., from standard computer software such as Power point and Excel, to complex image analysis software and flow cytometry analysis software). Training is provided for specialized software, with the expectation of rapidly achieving technical proficiency and progressing to independent operation in a timely manner.
15. Demonstrate strong planning and organizational skills.
16. Communicate effectively and professionally with supervisors and colleagues.
17. Maintain accurate and complete laboratory records, including electronic and physical documentation of experiments, protocols, SOPs, and related activities.
18. Manage laboratory inventory, including chemicals, cell lines, tissues, antibodies, and equipment, in accordance with UM requirements.
19. Coordinate ordering of laboratory supplies, maintain records of purchases, track pending orders, and identify appropriate products when necessary.
20. Promptly address and communicate any laboratory or administrative issues, coordinating with supervisors and relevant UM departments as needed.
21. Contribute to overall laboratory organization, cleanliness, and maintenance activities.
