Regional Safety Manager
Job Description Role Overview A waste company is seeking an experienced Regional Safety Manager to oversee safety operations for one of our largest regions, supporting ~1,000 employees across three companies (two hauling operations and one recycling facility) in the San Francisco Bay Area, including Sunset Scavenger. This is a true safety leadership role—not environmental or EHS heavy. The ideal candidate has prior regional level safety oversight, proven people management experience, and deep working knowledge of OSHA, DOT, and Cal/OSHA regulations within operational, driver intensive environments. You will directly manage a team of 9 Safety Professionals, partner closely with local GMs and operations leadership, and help elevate the safety program to a more mature, professional level. 90 Days Success Story: Establish credibility and trust with site leadership, GMs, and the safety team • Complete extensive site visits across the region to understand operations and risk profiles • Assess the current state of safety across the region and identify priority gaps • Begin aligning and professionalizing safety practices across all three companies • Create collaborative relationships across operations, HR, and claims teams ________________________________________ Key Responsibilities • Lead and develop a team of 9 Safety Professionals, providing guidance, accountability, and performance management • Own safety strategy and execution for a multi site, multi company region with 1,000+ employees • Conduct frequent site visits, especially in the first 90 days, to assess risk, culture, and operational gaps • Build strong working relationships with General Managers, Operations Leaders, and cross functional partners • Refine, standardize, and elevate existing safety programs to support a more mature, professional safety culture • Ensure ongoing compliance with Cal/OSHA, OSHA, and DOT regulations • Represent safety leadership during hearings, investigations, and legal proceedings as needed • Lead the Workers’ Compensation process, working closely with claims teams and stakeholders (intermediate level expertise required) • Support and oversee Temporary Alternative Work (TAW) programs managed at the local level • Respond to incidents, emergencies, and time sensitive safety issues as they arise We are a company committed to creating diverse and inclusive environments where people can bring their full, authentic selves to work every day. Skills and Requirements Required Qualifications • Prior experience as a Regional Safety Manager or equivalent role overseeing multiple sites • Proven people management experience, including leading managers or senior safety professionals • Strong background in OSHA, DOT, and Cal/OSHA compliance (Cal/OSHA experience required) • Experience within safety driven operational industries, such as: o Waste / Recycling o Transportation or Freight o Garbage, green waste o Water or food delivery o Uniform services (e.g., Cintas, Aramark) • Experience participating in or testifying at hearings, investigations, or legal cases • Working knowledge of Workers’ Compensation processes and claim coordination • Familiarity with Temporary Alternative Work (TAW) programs Preferred Qualifications • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) - not required • Federal OSHA exposure a plus • Experience elevating or modernizing safety programs across multi site operations
