Job Summary

The Regional Energy Manager (REM) is responsible for developing and maintaining the organization's energy conservation program.  Working in collaboration with building owners, building occupants, managers, and maintenance personnel, the REM ensures that assigned buildings are meeting the needs of occupants (faculty, staff, and students) while consuming the least amount of energy for electricity, steam, natural gas, and water. The REM works with EM support staff to implement energy reduction methodologies and building system optimization.  The position will report directly to the Manager of EM.

This position will support the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) and operate within the LSA Facilities & Operations team.  LSA has 24 buildings covering over 4 million square feet on the Ann Arbor campus, with several off-campus buildings.  The Ann Arbor portfolio is a mix of wet bench laboratories, computational research, vivarium, classrooms, and office space.

 Responsibilities*Fan scheduling & runtime reportingBuilding walkthroughs to identify energy wasteMonitor monthly utility consumption for variationsCoordination with facilities maintenance groups (with a focus on energy conservation)Occupant engagementSteam trap testing - coordinationMain contact for the building facility manager regarding energy issuesReview capital project plans and provide comments related to system selection/design for energy efficiencyIdentify and analyze other potential operational savingsBuilding Automation System (BAS) programming/trend reviewLead building energy deep dives with engineering supportDevelop scopes of work for re-commissioning projectsIdentify potential Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs), including cost analysis with payback period and GHG reduction impactAssist with ECM commissioning, measurement & verification, and closeoutParticipate in the budget planning process (as requested)Other assignments, as identified, result in decreased utility consumptionCreate new and implement existing energy programs as opportunities ariseIdentify and lead new technology pilot projectsIdentify operational issues using remote commissioning techniques and submit to maintenance or BAS for repairAct as the OCS project manager for ECM and Retro-Cx projectsAssist the facility/school/college in developing a short/long-term ECM capital plan (as needed)Lead the evaluations of new technology pilot projectsAssist in the development of new tools and methods to increase workflow efficiency
 Required Qualifications*A Bachelor's degree in a technical field or an equivalent combination of education and experienceDemonstrated knowledge of building heating, ventilation, air conditioning, electrical, and water systemsPractical experience with digital building control technology and BAS5 years of experience in a facilities management environmentDemonstrated experience in leading programs and projectsDemonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, at all levels of an organizationDemonstrated proficiency with current computer technology and applications (i.e., Google Docs, Microsoft Office Suite, work management interface, etc.)Ability to travel frequently between sites across the U-M Ann Arbor campus
 Desired Qualifications*Certified Energy Manager certification from the Association of Energy Engineers, or the ability to be obtained within 1 yearBachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Electrical EngineeringExperience working in research laboratory facilities and associated building systemsExperience in higher education, public service, or a non-profit organizationPrior knowledge of and experience with university or research buildingsPrior experience interacting with a diverse population at all levels, including bargained-for and non-bargained-for staffDemonstrated passion for energy conservation and waste reduction activities or environmental actionDemonstrated success leading cross-functional teamsDemonstrated proficiency with a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS)
 Work Schedule

The work schedule is primarily regular business hours; however, the candidate must be able to adjust their schedule for occasional after-hours and work-related duties.

This position may be eligible for flexible work arrangements, including hybrid (on-site and remote) work.  Candidates must live or be able to relocate to within a reasonable commuting distance from Ann Arbor.
